Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá několik ze změn, které během devatenáctého století přetvářely strukturu britské společnosti a které měly značný dopad na každodenní životy pracujících. Dále pak zjišťuje, jak tyto změny vnímal D. H. Lawrence, a to prostřednictvím analýzy dvou z jeho raných děl, která jsou primárními zdroji pro tuto práci. Jak román Synové a Milenci, tak i povídka „Vůně Chryzantém“ značně odrážejí Lawrencovy vlastní zážitky z dětství, kdy vyrůstal v rodině horníka, a jsou tudíž cenným zdrojem pro zkoumání života obyvatel hornických oblastí průmyslového severu Anglie. Co se týče struktury této práce, první úvodní kapitola popisuje pracovní podmínky horníků během devatenáctého století, zmiňuje několik zákonů, jejichž cílem bylo tyto podmínky zlepšit, a stručně shrnuje tehdejší stav britského uhelného průmyslu. Druhá kapitola se soustřeďuje na postup urbanizace v Anglii během doby, na kterou se tato práce zaměřuje, na stav měst během pozdního viktoriánského období a na vývoj urbanizace v severních hornických oblastech a v hrabství Nottinghamshire, odkud D. H. Lawrence pocházel. Jeho názory na industrialismus, urbanizaci a jejich vliv na životy pracujících jsou popsány v třetí kapitole, která kromě primárních zdrojů čerpá i z Lawrencovy eseje „Nottingham and the Mining Country“. Poslední kapitola této práce zkoumá, jak společenské a ekonomické změny, které s sebou přinesla industrializace, ovlivnily britské rodiny z pracujících tříd a přetvořily jejich strukturu. Zvláštní pozornost je přitom věnována rodinám horníků a jejich životním podmínkám. Závěr shrnuje nejdůležitější fakta a poznatky, které tato práce obsahuje.

Abstract:

This thesis explores a few of the changes which altered the structure of British society during the course of the nineteenth century and had a profound effect on the lives of the working classes. It also examines D. H. Lawrence’s view of these processes by analyzing two of his early texts which constitute the primary sources for this thesis. Both the novel Sons and Lovers and the short story “Odour of Chrysanthemums” considerably reflect Lawrence’s own experience of growing up in a family of a collier and are therefore valuable for the investigation of the patterns of working-class life in coal-mining areas of the industrial North. As far as the structure of this thesis is concerned, the first introductory chapter describes the actual working conditions of colliers during the period in question, discusses a few Acts which were supposed to ameliorate their conditions and summarizes the then state of British coal mining industry. Chapter 2 focuses on the trends of urbanization in Britain, the late Victorian city and on the progress of urbanization in northern coal-mining areas as well as in Lawrence’s home county, Nottinghamshire. D. H. Lawrence’s views on industrialism, urbanization and its effects on working-class life are explored in Chapter 3 which, apart from the primary sources, draws the relevant information from Lawrence’s essay “Nottingham and the Mining Country.” Chapter 4 examines how the social and economic changes which were linked to industrialization affected British working-class families and altered their structure, with an emphasis on colliers’ families and their conditions. The conclusion sums up the points made in the four chapters and the most important findings included in the thesis.
