Brexit and the Scottish Independence Referendum: British Secessionism

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce je dôkladne zvážiť determinanty podpory secesie v Škótsku v kontexte Európskej integrácie. Práca skúma faktory podpory secesie z dvoch hľadísk - na agregovanej a individuálnej úrovni. V agregovanej analýze sa dokument zameriava na vplyv ekonomických faktorov vrátane vzťahu k EÚ - z hľadiska transferov, obchodu a imigrácie, a politických preferencií na výsledky referenda o Škótskej nezávislosti v roku 2014 na lokálnej úrovni. Na rozdiel od vzťahov k EÚ, dôchodok, nezamestnanosť a škrty v rozpočte vysvetľujú výrazné rozdiely vo výsledkoch referenda. Na individuálnej úrovni práca skúma úlohu ekonomických očakávaní, politických preferencií a postoja k členstvu v EÚ na základe údajov z prieskumov verejnej mienky. Napriek existencii slabého prepojenia medzi Euroskepticizmom a secesionizmom, diplomová práca ďalej skúma verejnú podporu secesie vo svetle euroskeptickej povahy voličov a ich finančnej situácie, sociálnej triedy a kvalifikácií.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to explore the determinants of support for secession in Scotland in the context of European integration. The thesis examines the factors of support for secession from two perspectives -- at the aggregate and individual level. In the aggregate-level analysis, the paper focuses on the effect of economic factors including exposure to the EU in terms of EU transfers, trade and immigration, and political preferences on the results of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum across local council areas. Unlike the exposure to the EU, income, unemployment and budget cuts turn out to explain substantial variation in the referendum results. At the individual level, the thesis studies the role of economic expectations, party preference and the attitude towards the EU membership based on the survey data. Despite the existence of a weak link between Euroscepticism and secessionism, the paper further explores public support for secession in the light of the Eurosceptic nature of the voters and their financial situation, social class and qualifications.
