Simulation of probe measurements in plasma

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce se zabývá simulacemi sondových (Langmuirových) měření nízkotlakého plazmatu. Primárním cílem je prozkoumání platnosti OML (Orbital Motion Limited) teorie, která je častou metodou vyhodnocení naměřených dat, nicméně předpoklady této teorie nemusí být v praxi splněny. Zvolenou numerickou metodou je tzv. Particle in Cell algoritmus, který patří do kategorie částicových řešičů. Oproti předchozím pracím na toto téma jsou vypočteny kompletní sondové charakteristiky včetně elektronové části, která je často vynechána vzhledem k výpočetní náročnosti. Práce systematickým způsobem studuje interakci sondy s okolním plazmatem. Pro případ sférických a cylindrických sond jsou prozkoumány závislosti sondového proudu na poloměru sondy a tlaku neutrálního plynu včetně porovnání s OML predikcemi. Detailně je studován způsob vzniku předstěnové vrstvy. Vedlejším produktem těchto studií je pak nová okrajové podmínka pro částicové kódy na vnějším okraji výpočetní domény, za kterou se předpokládá neporušené plazma. Závěrem práce jsou pak studovány emisní cylindrické sondy, především pak vliv teploty sondy na plovoucí potenciál. Předkládaná dizertační práce je kompilátem akademických publikací, do kterých autor výraznou měrou přispěl. Tyto publikace byly zpětně prostudovány a jejich výsledky shrnuty, okomentovány a zasazeny do jednotného kontextu.

Abstract:

This Ph.D. thesis deals with simulation of Langmuir probe measurements in low-temperature plasma. The main aim is to explore the validity of the OML (Orbital Motion Limited) theory, commonly used for interpreting measured data. The assumptions of the theory are, however, not fulfilled for many practical examples. In order to explore it, a Particle-In-Cell solver for self-consistent simulation of plasma species is developed. In contrast to the previous works on this topic, complete probe characteristics are computed. These include the electron part which is often omitted due to computational demands. This work systematically studies the interaction of a probe with the surrounding plasma. The effect of the probe radius and neutral gas pressure, is explored for the case of a spherical and a cylindrical probe. The results are then compared to the OML theory along with a detailed study of pre-sheath formation. As a side-effect of these studies, a novel boundary condition for the outer edge of the computational domain is formulated. Lastly, this thesis studies emissive cylindrical probes, especially the dependence of the floating potential on the probe temperature. The presented Ph.D. thesis is a compilation of peer-reviewed publications to which the author made a significant contribution. The publications have been re-read carefully, their findings summarized and put in a common context.
