Homogeneous nucleation of alcohols in a laminar flow diffusion chamber

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá numerickými simulacemi homogenní nukleace alkoholů v difuzní komoře s laminárním tokem (LFDC). Byly provedeny numerické simulace procesu nukleace v LFDC pomocí dvou CFD modelů. První z nich předpokládá, že tvorba kapalné fáze, která vzniká v kondenzátoru z důvodu prudkého ochlazení par alkoholu, nemá zásadní vliv na výsledné chování systému. Výpočet tvorby aerosolů se provádí až následně po ukončení simulace. Druhý model předpokládá existenci plynné a kapalné fáze a jejich vzájemné interakce během celého simulačního procesu. Jedná se o velmi složitý, v odborné literatuře nepříliš využívaný, modelovací přístup. Zjednodušený přístup prvního modelu k procesu homogenní nukleace může však vnášet do získaných řešení chyby. Proto byly v rámci této práce porovnány výsledky obou modelovacích přístupů a určeny problematické oblasti, kde se výsledky obou přístupů lišily. Ukázalo se, že rozdíl ve velikosti maximálních hodnot nukleační rychlosti u obou přístupů je závislý na poměru rychlosti úbytku plynné fáze z důvodu vzniku kapalné aerosolové fáze, ku rychlosti radiálního transportu par alkoholu do míst vznikajícího aerosolu. Transport par do oblastí s velkou nukleační rychlostí může být dán dvěma způsoby. Konvekcí způsobenou radiálním pohybem, který je zapříčiněn teplotními gradienty. Druhým způsobem je difuzí z důvodu fázové přeměny par na kapalinu, která indikuje vznik koncentračního gradientu alkoholu v plynné fázi. V případě, že se plynná fáze transformuje na kapalnou rychleji, než se stačí doplňovat z okolí, vykazují výsledky získané ze složitějšího modelu menší hodnoty nukleačních rychlostí než nukleační rychlosti vypočtené z modelu pracujícího pouze s plynnou fázi. V určitých případech vzniká nukleací tak velké množství aerosolů, že nedostatek par alkoholu v místech velké nukleační rychlosti vede k velké deformaci nukleační zóny a posunu její maximální hodnoty proti směru proudění plynu. Pokud je rychlost transportního mechanismu par dostatečná vzhledem k rychlosti úbytku par, nukleační rychlost se může u složitějšího modelu zvýšit vzhledem k výsledkům modelu, který vznik kapalné fáze nepředpokládá.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on numerical simulations of homogeneous nucleation of alcohols in a laminar flow diffusion chamber (LFDC). Numerical simulations of the nucleation process in LFDC were performed using two CFD models. The first one assumes that the formation of the liquid phase, which occurs in the condenser due to the rapid cooling of the alcohol vapor, has no significant effect on the resulting behavior of the system. The computation of aerosol formation is performed after the simulation is completed. The second model assumes the existence of gaseous and liquid phases and their interaction throughout the simulation process. This very complex modeling approach is not widely used in the literature. However, the simplified first model approach to the homogeneous nucleation process may introduce errors in the obtained solutions. Therefore, this work compared the results of the two modeling approaches and identified problem areas where the results of the two approaches differed. The difference in the magnitude of the maximum nucleation rate for the two approaches was shown to be dependent on the ratio of the rate of gas-phase depletion due to the formation of a liquid aerosol phase to the rate of alcohol vapor transport to the locations of the aerosol formation. Vapor transport to regions with high nucleation rates can be achieved in two ways. By Convection due to radial motion, it is caused by temperature gradients. The second way is by diffusion due to vapor-to-liquid phase transformation which indicates the formation of an alcohol concentration gradient in the gas phase. If the gas phase transforms to liquid faster than the ambient replenishment is sufficient, the results obtained from the more complex model show smaller values of the nucleation rate than the nucleation rates calculated from the model working only with the gas phase. In some instances, nucleation produces such a large amount of aerosols that the lack of alcohol vapor at high nucleation rates leads to large deformation of the nucleation zone and a shift of its maximum value against the direction of the gas flow. If the rate of the vapor transport mechanism is sufficient relative to the rate of vapor loss, the nucleation rate may increase in the more complex model relative to the results from the model that does not assume liquid phase formation.
