Welfare of herd animals during sheepherding trainings and competitions

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce shrnuje základní poznatky o výcviku ovčáckého psa a srovnává řády jednotlivých organizací pořádajících soutěže v ovládání stáda pomocí ovčáckého psa se zaměřením na zachování welfare pasených zvířat. Dále se zaměřuje na prezentaci vědeckých poznatků v oblasti stresových faktorů ovlivňujících chování a fyziologické hodnoty stád ovcí. Ve druhé části práce je předložena metodika posouzení stresového vlivu soutěží a výcviku ovčáckých psů na stádo ovcí a vyhodnocení dat ze sledovaných akcí. Cílem této práce je potvrdit hypotézu, zda méně zkušení psi vyvolávají výraznější stresové reakce u ovcí a sestavit doporučení pro pořadatele soutěží a výcvikových lekcí v zájmu zachování a zlepšení welfare používaných zvířat.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis summarizes basic findings about training of a sheepdog and compares rules of different organisations that hold sheepherding competitions with the focus on preserving the welfare of herd animals. Further it focuses on presentation of scientific findings in the area of stress factors with influence on behaviour and physiologic values of sheep. In the second part of this paper the methodology is submitted for detection of the influence of stress factors during competitions and sheepherding trainings on the flock of sheep and the evaluation of data collected at these events. The aim of this paper is to confirm the hypothesis whether less experienced dogs cause more severe stress reactions at sheep and make a list of recommendations for organisers of sheepherding events in order to preserve and improve welfare of herd animals during these events.
