Methods of English Pronunciation Teaching at Lower Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá metodami výuky anglické výslovnosti používanými učiteli na 2. stupni základních škol. Teoretická část této práce představuje dvě lingvistické disciplíny zabývající se zvukovou stránkou jazyka – fonetiku a fonologii. Dále nabízí pohled na historický vývoj výuky výslovnosti a představuje metody a aktivity, které mohou být užity při výuce výslovnosti, jak individuálních fonémů, tak slovního přízvuku. Druhá část práce představuje výsledky pozorování hodin sedmi učitelů 2. stupně ZŠ, které bylo provedeno na dvou základních školách. Zaměření této analytické části je na metody, které jsou užity při výuce výslovnosti (pokud je výuka výslovnosti zahrnuta v rámci hodiny), a celkový přístup učitelů k výuce výslovnosti jako takový.

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis preoccupies with an observation of methods of pronunciation teaching used by lower secondary school teachers. The theoretical part briefly introduces the two linguistic disciplines which are occupied with the sound system of language – phonetics and phonology. Further, it provides insight into the historical development of pronunciation teaching and introduces methods and activities that may be used to teach pronunciation of individual sounds and the placement of the word stress. The second part of the thesis presents results of observations of seven teachers and their lessons; the observations were conducted at two different lower secondary schools. The focus of the research is the methods that are used to teach pronunciation (if pronunciation teaching is included in the lesson at all) and teacher's general attitude towards pronunciation teaching.
