Abstract:

The increasing growth of the ageing population poses a significant challenge in terms of their care cost in the future. The elderly population is growing rapidly around the world, and with that comes an increasing need for technology to support their independence and wellbeing. Ambient Intelligence (AmI) is a promising technology that can be used to create smart environments that are sensitive, responsive, and adaptive to the needs of elderly people. This thesis provides a comprehensive review of current research on AmI in supporting elderly people, exploring the potential benefits and challenges of this technology, and identifying future directions for research and development. The number of elderly individuals aged 60 and above globally has quadrupled from 202 million in 1950 to 901 million and is expected to triple by 2100. In India, the number of elderly people is projected to increase from 5% of the population in 2015 to 20.9% by 2050. The cost of caring for the elderly is already a challenge, and it will be more difficult to meet in the future, leading to higher healthcare expenditure. Elderly people desire to live independently in their own homes and practice normal activities, but there is a lack of professionally designed systems that can fulfill their growing needs. These demographic changes raise challenges related to the elderly people's quality of life, including health, autonomy, care, social communication, and institutional service utilization. Providing dependable self-adapting technological innovations is necessary to address these challenges. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) aims to improve the quality of life of elderly people and provide them with technologies and services that support their daily activities, help them live longer, and remain independent at home. This research aims to review AMI and AAL technology, provide examples of relevant technologies and applications, and examine elderly people's attitudes and perceptions towards using AMI technologies in India. It also explores the factors that affect the adoption of AMI technologies in India by conducting a systematic review and using quantitative and qualitative analyses. The questionnaire results show that elderly individuals in India are willing to accept and use AMI technologies, and several factors influence their adoption and use. This provides insight into solutions for supporting their independent living
