Teaching pronunciation and its impact on Czech students

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o výuce výslovnosti anglického jazyka a následný dopad tohoto vyučování u studentů. V teoretické části se autor pokusí nastínit pojem „výslovnost“ a dále důvody proč vyučovat výslovnost, cíle tohoto vyučování nebo také faktory, které toho vyučování můžou učiteli ztížit. V praktické části autor nejprve udělal se svými studenty dotazník, aby zjistil jejich počáteční znalosti vyslovování a provedl s nimi nahrávky vybraného textu. Dále předložil dotazník svým kolegům na jazykové škole, kde se jich dotazoval, jestli učí výslovnost ve svých hodinách. Následně oba tyto dotazníky, včetně nahrávek vyhodnotil. Autor své studenty učil každý týden čtyři vyučovací hodiny výslovnost na jazykové škole po dobu pěti měsíců, aby zjistil, jaký výsledek se dostaví u studentů bez jakýchkoli předchozích zkušeností s rodilými mluvčími, či výukou výslovnosti. Po pěti měsících autor této diplomové práce znovu nahrál čtení svých studentů a porovnal a zhodnotil dosažené výsledky s předchozí nahrávkou.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of teaching English pronunciation and its impact on students. In the theoretical background chapter, the author introduces the topic of pronunciation and the reasons why pronunciation should be taught, the reasons for this teaching, including its goals but also the factors which can influence pronunciation teaching. In the practical part the author has done a pre-research study on his students to find out the initial level of his students’ pronunciation and recorded their reading of a chosen text. He has also done a research with his colleagues in order to find out whether they teach pronunciation in their classes. Consequently, he has evaluated the results of these questionnaires including the recordings. Later, he was teaching his students four pronunciation lessons every week for five months to find out what impact it would have on students without any previous experience with a native speaker and special pronunciation-focused lessons. After five months, the author has recorded his student’s readings again to compare it with the previous recordings and summarize the results.
