How the Covid -19 pandemic changed economic convergence and inequality

Abstract:

The concerns regarding the widening gaps between poor and rich countries has been raised due to the recent global economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. ASEAN countries are an example of the fast-growing developing countries with big economic potential. Thus, it is important to examine how their growth trends changed due to the recession in 2020 and which effects it had on the convergence and income gap between member states. The hypothesis is that the covid-19 crisis slowed down the convergence process. This work tests the beta convergence and sigma-convergence between ASEAN member states. The results of the regression analysis showed a slight decrease from 2,12% to 2,07% in speed of the convergence, but the sigma convergence was not affected. Hence, the pandemic crisis negatively affected the convergence between the ASEAN countries, nevertheless, it did not widen the income gap.

Abstract:

Nedávná globální ekonomická krize způsobená pandemií Covid-19 vyvolala obavy z prohlubování propasti mezi chudými a bohatými zeměmi. Země ASEAN jsou příkladem rychle rostoucích rozvojových zemí s velkým ekonomickým potenciálem. Je tedy důležité prozkoumat, jak se jejich růstové trendy změnily v důsledku recese v roce 2020 a jaký dopad to mělo na konvergenci příjmů a rozdíly mezi členskými státy. Hypotézou je, že krize covid-19 zpomalila proces konvergence. Tato práce testuje beta konvergenci a sigma konvergenci mezi členskými státy ASEAN. Výsledky regresní analýzy ukázaly mírný pokles míry konvergence z 2,12 % na 2,07 %, ale konvergence sigma nebyla ovlivněna. Pandemická krize tedy negativně ovlivnila sbližování mezi zeměmi ASEAN, ale nezvýšila příjmové rozdíly.
