Zmeny redoxného stavu buniek výrazne ovplyvňujú fyziológiu buniek, vrátane modulácie ich diferenciácie. Kľúčovú úlohu hrajú intracelulárne produkované reaktívne matabolity kyslíku (reactive oxygen species - ROS), ktoré sú v súčasnosti považované za dôležité mediátory v regulácii bunkových funkcií a prenose intracelulárneho signálu.
