Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá zobrazováním různých druhů strachu ve fiktivních příbězích. Sleduje mytologická ztvárnění archetypních úzkosti od prvních civilizací až po moderní dystopickou literaturu. Žánr dystopie reprezentuje monumentální dílo Aldouse Huxleyho, Brave New World, nejen kvůli jeho historickému významu, ale i z důvodu jeho literárního přínosu. Hlavním cílem práce je prostřednictvím výzkumu archetypů vyjadřovaných v jeho románu a s primárním zaměřením na nelidské prostředí a odcizování popsat charakter věčných strachů našeho druhu. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř částí. První z nich se zabývá vyprávěním příběhů a vytvářením mýtů jako neodmyslitelnými součástmi lidského života v každém koutu světa i v každém historickém období. Následující dvě části se zabývají utopickými a dystopickými žánry a pokouší se osvětlit, proč jsou tyto typy literatury hodnotnými zdroji při zkoumání forem lidských snů a obav. Poslední sekce se věnuje samotnému románu. Práce se dílem Brave New World zabývá jakožto dystopickým dílem, které je zároveň otevřenou kritikou některých sociálních a politických praktik tehdejší doby. Literární tropy a narážky pomáhají čtenáři přehodnotit ideu utopismu a její principy pohodlí, pořádku a rozumu, které jsou v dnešní společnosti vysoce ceněny. Závěrem je, že román využívá archetypní strach z nelidskosti, aby čtenáři ukázala úskalí našeho vlastního systému hodnot a přesvědčení. Brave New World je dystopií pohodlí, jež slouží jako varování před volbou konformity na úkor lidskosti.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the representation of varieties of fear in storytelling. It traces the mythological renditions of archetypal anxieties from early civilizations to modern dystopian literature. Aldous Huxley’s monumental work, Brave New World, has been chosen as a representative of the genre of dystopia, both because of its historical significance, as well as literary merit. The main aim is to show through an examination of the archetypes expressed in the novel the nature of eternal anxieties of our species, with a primary focus on the inhuman environment and alienation. The thesis is divided into four sections. First of these deals with storytelling and mythmaking as an inherent capacity of human beings, regardless of the particular period or area of the world. The next two sections deal with utopian and dystopian genres respectively and aim to explain how this type of literature is a great source for investigating the shape of human dreams and fears. Finally, the last section is devoted to Huxley’s novel itself. Brave New World is considered in the perspective of dystopia, as an overt critique of some of social and political practices of the day. The literary allusions and tropes serve as a way of reconsidering the dream of utopianism with its principles of comfort, order, and reason, highly valued in the society today. In conclusion, the novel uses the archetypal anxieties of inhumanity in order to show us the pitfalls of our own belief system and values. I conclude that Brave New World is a dystopia of comfort, serving as a warning against the choice of conformity over humanity.
