Hukkle: Detail as a Tool for Extending Presence

Abstract:

Tato práce je neoformalistickou analýzou prvního celovečerního filmu György Pálfiho "Škyt" (Maďarsko, 2002) vycházející z předem prodiskutovaného a popsaného metodologického aparátu. V úvodní části nastiňujeme základní metodologické přístupy pro naši studii: Neoformalistickou teorii Davida Bordwella a Kristin Thompsonové a koncepci "totální historie" Barbary Klingerové. Zároveň zde definujeme klíčové pojmy (jako dominanta, druhy motivace či ozvláštnění) a stručně uvedeme do Bordwellovy teorie parametrické narace. Poté prodiskutujeme některé slabiny kognitivistického paradigmatu, v němž je neoformalismus včetně Brodwellových narativních teorií zakotven. Ve druhé části reprodukujeme některé režisérovy komentáře k tomuto filmu a stručně pohovoříme o historickém kontextu a podmínkách, ze kterých "Škyt" vzešel. Ve třetí kapitole využíváme metodologický aparát zmíněný výše k provedení stěžejní neoformalistické analýzy. Ta je rozdělena na dvě části: narativní a stylistickou. Nejdříve popíšeme vlastnosti narace, načež definujeme specifické stylistické prostředky a jejich vztah k dominantě filmu. Dominantu samu nalézáme ve snaze rozšířit přítomnost, otestovat hranice reality a prozkoumat její vztah k času.

Abstract:

In this paper we are analyzing György Pálfi´s debut feature film Hukkle which was made in Hungary in 2002. Firstly we discussed basic methodological approaches for our study: David Bordwell´s and Kristin Thompson´s neoformalism concept, and Barbara Klinger´s idea of total history. We also defined some key terms (such as dominant, types of motivation or enstrangement) and introduce Bordwell´s theory of parametric narration. Then we argued cognitivist paradigma in which neoformalism and Bordwell´s narrative theories are rooted. In second part we mentioned some directors comments on his movie and then we spoke shortly about its historical context and conditions from which the movie cames out. In third chapter we use methodological aparatus mentioned above to execute a neoformalist analyse, which is divided into two parts, narrative and stylistic. We described narrative qualities and stylistic specifics in relation to dominant of this movie which we founded in extending presence, checking the limits of reality and explore its relations to time.
