Training methods for scent work dogs in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Pes je nepostradatelnou součástí lidských životů už doby kamenné. Psí smysly, vyvinutější než ty lidské, byly a stále zůstávají užitečnou pomůckou všude tam, kde lidské schopnosti ani technika nestačí. Pachová stopa se na místě činu nachází vždy, ale není lidskými smysly postřehnutelná, proto nemůže být pachatelem záměrně zničena. Výcvikem psů pro pachové práce se zabývá policejní kynologie. V policejní službě se psí čich využívá k vyhledání pachatele z místa činu, hledání lidí nebo lidských ostatků nebo k zadržení pašeráků zakázaného kontrabandu. Výcvik psů začíná již v útlém věku, ale v méně intenzivní formě probíhá po celý jejich život. Úspěšný výcvik psa je závislý na několika klíčových bodech, kterými jsou vztah psovoda a psa, psychická vyrovnanost psovoda, dodržování vhodných postupů, logická návaznost tréninků a výběr vhodného psa pro požadovaný druh výcviku.

Abstract:

A dog has been an indispensable part of people’s lives since The Stone Age. Canine senses, more evolved than those of humans, have been and still remain, a useful tool whenever humans abilities and technology are infufficient. The scent is alwayls found at the crime scene, but is imperceptible by humans sences, so it cannot be deliberately destroyed by the perpetrator. Training dogs for scent work is being done by department of police cynology. In the police service, the dog’s sense of smell is used to locate the perpetrator from the crime scene, to find people or human remains, or to apprehend smugglers of prohibited contraband. The training of dogs begins at early age, but in less intense form than the one through their lives. Successful training of a dog depends on several key points, such as the relationship between the handler and the dog, the handler’s mental composure, compliance with appropriate procedures , logical follow-up of training sessions and the selection of a suitable dog for the required type of training.
