Benefits of increased wheat seed vigour

Abstract:

Změna klimatu spolu s transformací zemědělství jsou jedny z hlavních hybných sil, které budou v následujících letech významným způsobem měnit zažitá pravidla a postupy v agrárním sektoru. Kombinace častější frekvence extrémních meteorologických situací (sucho, vysoké teploty, holomrazy, prodlužování vegetačního období a tím rizika pozdních mrazů apod.) a společenského tlaku na redukci používaných agrochemikálií (Zelená dohoda pro Evropu), zintenzivní, mimo jiné, poptávku po kvalitním rozmnožovacím materiálu a tolerantních odrůdách. V této práci bylo zkoumáno šest genotypů pšenice, z nichž jedna polovina byla předem vyselektována na vyšší vitalitu a druhá na nižší vitalitu. Tato semena byla následně zaseta do osmi kontejnerů, ve kterých panovaly čtyři různé vláhové režimy. Sklizená zrna byla následně laboratorně testována, přičemž se zkoumala jejich klíčivost a projevy vitality. Bylo zjištěno, že za běžných půdních a vláhových podmínek nebyly mezi těmito genotypy patrné rozdíly ve vývoji klíčku a zárodečných kořenů, avšak snížená vitalita se projevila v kontejnerech, kde docházelo k různým intenzitám vodního deficitu. Tímto se prokázala důležitost provenience osiva, která má potenciál stát se jedním z kritérií kvality, ke kterým budou zemědělci přihlížet při nákupu osiv.

Abstract:

Climate change, together with the transformation of agriculture, are one of the ma-in driving forces that will significantly change the rules and practices in the ag-ricultural sector in the upcoming years. The combination of more frequent extre-me weather situations (drought, high temperatures, holofrosts, prolongation of the growing season and thus the risk of late frosts, etc.) and social pressure to re-duce the usage of agrochemicals (European Green Deal) intensified, beyond others, the demand for quality propagating material and tolerant varieties. In this work, six genotypes of winter wheat were examined, one half of which was pre-selected for higher vigour and the other for lower vigour. These seeds were then sown in eight containers in which four different moisture regimes prevailed. The harvested grains were then laboratory tested for germination and vigour. It was found that under normal soil and moisture conditions, there were no significant differences in plumule and seminal roots development between these genotypes, but the vigour was manifested in containers where different water deficit intensi-ties occurred. This has demonstrated the importance of provenance, which has the potential to become one of the quality criteria that farmers will take into account while buying seeds.
