Ethical aspects of protection of animals in the chosen publications of prominent representatives of biocentrims

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá etickými myšlenkami ve vybraných dílech tří předních představitelů biocentrismu, konkrétně vztahem člověka k mimolidskému světu (živočichům a ostatním organismům). U každého z nich jsou představena specifická klíčová slova (princip rovného zvážení zájmů v případě Singera, úcta k životu v případě Schweitzera a postoj úcty k přírodě v případě Taylora). V jednotlivých myšlenkách těchto osobností jsou nalezeny podobnosti – např. odmítnutí antropocentrismu a požadavek rozšíření hranic morální sféry, i rozdíly – např. v odlišných hranicích sféry morálního zájmu, v odbornosti argumentace, v odlišném náhledu na vliv náboženství pro etiku. Navrženy jsou i pravděpodobné příčiny těchto rozdílů. Také se zabývá otázkou, zda jsou tyto etické koncepce vhodné pro eticky se stravující jedince (vegetariány, vegany a vitariány). Dochází k závěru, že Singerova etická koncepce je vhodná pro vegetariány, a etická koncepce Schweitzera a Taylora spíše pro vegany nebo vitariány.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the ethical ideas contained in the chosen publications of three prominent representatives of biocentrism, concretely with human relationship with non-human environment (animals and other organisms). For each of them is introduced characteristic key word (equal consideration of interests in the case of Singer, reverence for life in the case of Schweitzer and respect for nature in the case of Taylor). Similarities are found in the particular ideas of these personalities – for example rejection of anthropocentrism and claim for expanding the sphere of moral concern, and also differences – for example different boundaries of the sphere of moral concern, the quality of argumentation, different view on the influence of religion on ethics. There are suggested probable causes of these differences. This thesis also deals with the question whether are these ethical conceptions suitable for ethical consumers (vegetarians, vegans and raw foodists). It is concluded, that Singer´s ethical conception is suitable for vegetarianists, and Schweitzer´s and Taylor´s ethical conception are rather for vegans or raw foodists.
