Border Effect in Air Transport

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá významem státních hranic v letecké dopravě. Přesněji je cílem určení efektu státní hranice v evropské letecké dopravě pro vybrané země, kterými jsou Francie, Německo, Španělsko a Polsko. Pro jeho splnění je použit sběr dat o leteckých spojeních, který probíhal v listopadu 2019, a robustní lineární regrese pro odhad výsledného efektu. Celkově je odhadnuto pět modelů, které se liší motivací a aplikovaným přístupem. Kromě prvního z nich, který používá základní vysvětlující proměnné, je prezentován model dělený dle jednotlivých sledovaných zemí a dva modely zaměřené na nejfrekventovanější a turistické destinace. Z toho důvodu se jednotlivé odhady efektu státní hranice liší odhadem jeho významnosti. Závěrem práce je zjištění, že efekt státní hranice je nadále důležitým faktorem v mezinárodní letecké dopravě, avšak je nižší, než jej odhadli někteří jiní autoři.

Abstract:

The main subject of this thesis is an estimation of the importance of country borders in air transport. More specifically, the aim is to estimate border effect in European air transport for selected countries - France, Germany, Spain, and Poland. To achieve this, a database of flights was built in November 2019 and robust linear regression was used for the estimation. There are five different models estimated, which differ by the motivation and applied logic. Apart from the first model that uses basic explanatory variables, there are four more extended models divided by individual countries and focused on top and tourist destinations. Because of these different approaches, individual border effect estimations vary. Still, in general, they prove to be important factors influencing international air transport. The conclusion of this thesis is that border effect still plays an important role but proved to be lower than generally believed.
