Initiation, religion and group cohesion of MS-13 gang: Signaling explanations of ritual costs

Abstract:

Gang MS-13, jeden z nejobávanějších a nejbrutálnějších zločineckých gangů na zemi, který čítá celosvětově mezi 30 až 50 tisíci členy, dominuje převážně ve střední a severní Americe. Vznikl mezi lety 1970 a 1980 v Los Angeles jako forma ochrany Salvadorských imigrantů proti útokům nepřátelských gangů, aktivních v Los Angeles. Čím to je, že tento gang existuje i přes tvrdou konkurenci a navzdory policejní represi už skoro půl století? Jak zajišťuje oddanost svých členů? Jakou roli hrají pro oddanost násilné iniciační rituály a jakou roli hraje náboženství? Jak vůbec vnímají členové MS-13 náboženství? K vysvětlení vysoké míry oddanosti, se pokusím přispět za pomocí signalizační teorie, která vychází z etologie a vysvětluje způsoby, kterými se určité komunikační akty snaží řešit nízkou reliabilitu přenášené informace při rizikové koordinaci. Teorie bude aplikována především na iniciační rituál tohoto gangu a na obličejová a celo-tělní tetování. Dále se práce zaměří na kontrast sekulárního a náboženského aspektu života uvnitř gangu, kde signalizační teorie nabídne možnosti pro lepší budoucí pochopení struktur a významů těchto aspektů.

Abstract:

The MS-13 Gang, one of the most feared and brutal criminal gangs on earth, counting between 30,000 to 50,000 members worldwide, predominates in Central and North America. It was established between 1970 and 1980 in Los Angeles as a form of protection for Salvadoran immigrants against attacks by enemy gangs active in Los Angeles. Why is it that this gang has existed for nearly half a century, despite fierce competition between gangs and police repression? How does it ensure the commitment of its members? What is the role of violent initiation rituals for devotion and what is the role of religion? How do MS-13 members perceive religion at all? I will try to contribute to the explanation of the high degree of devotion with the help of signaling theory, which is based on ethology and explains the ways in which certain communication acts try to address the low reliability of the transmitted information in risk coordination. The theory will be applied primarily to the initiation ritual of this gang and to facial and full-body tattoos. Furthermore, the work will focus on the contrast of the secular and religious aspects of life within the gang, where signaling theory will offer opportunities for a better future understanding of the structures and meanings of these aspects.
