Jaromír Podešva - His Theory of the Cadence in the Twelve-note Field and its Application in his Symphony No. 3

Abstract:

ak sám název práce napovídá, zabývali jsme se Teorií kadence ve dvanáctitónovém poli skladatele Jaromíra Podešvy (1927–2000) a jejím praktickém uplatnění přímo v autorově díle. Jinými slovy šlo o to postihnout pro Podešvu charakteristický styl tonální dodekafonie na Symfonii č. 3. Ve skladbě autora 20. století však vždy musíme přístup k analýze přizpůsobit konkrétnímu stylu, způsobu zápisu, dílu či autorovi, a proto se naše analýza přímo váže na Podešvovu teorii, kterou je tedy její součástí. Uplatnili jsme také klasickou analýzu formy, melodiky, harmonie, rytmiky a instrumentace. Zabývali jsme se také tzv. hudební paralelou, tj. formou, která byla pro tohoto skladatele velmi typická. V rozboru skladatelova teoretického díla jsme se pokusili ozřejmit, v čem spočívá princip této formy – není to sledování detailů převážně literární předlohy, ale vytvoření souběžného hudebního adekvátu, ve kterém se skladatel snaží zachytit základní smysl alespoň jednoho aspektu, klíčového bodu či detailu předlohy. Pro svou vlastní tvorbu nacházel často inspiraci v literatuře. Autorem, se kterým se myšlenkově nejvíce sblížil, byl Bohumil Hrabal. Na jeho náměty napsal celkem tři symfonické paralely – kromě Třetí symfonie, resp. její druhé věty, je to ještě buffo-balet, pantomima Bambini di Praga z roku 1968 a Slavnosti sněženek aneb pocta Bohumilu Hrabalovi aneb absolutně programní hudba pro velký orchestr z roku 1980. Vzájemný vztah obou umělců demonstrujeme také na edici korespondence, která se vztahuje právě ke třem výše uvedeným dílům. Třetí symfonie byla dokončena v roce 1966, tedy v roce, kdy skladatel evidentně a vědomě začal uplatňovat vlastní metody tonální dodekafonie, které definoval později ve stati „Možnosti kadence ve dvanáctitónovém poli“ z roku 1974. V ní se podle vlastních slov pokusil tuto vlastní kompoziční metodu z let 1966–1969 zobecnit. Sám autor také uvádí, že tato symfonie je výsledkem jeho studijního pobytu v USA, Paříži a Anglii. První část s názvem Kulminace vychází z textu Milana Kundery, druhá – Perla na dně pak z diskusního příspěvku s názvem Na struně mezi kolíbkou a rakví ze symposia o kritice, který vyšel v Literárních novinách. Obě literární ukázky vypovídají o stejném problému, každý z autorů se zabývá smyslem lidské existence svým osobitým způsobem. K analýze jsme použili jednak tištěnou partituru skladby vydanou nakladatelstvím Panton, jednak jednu ze dvou existujících nahrávek skladby se Státní filharmonií Brno a dirigentem Jiřím Waldhansem. Dvouvětá symfonie vykazuje jasné známky symfonického cyklu v rámci obou vět, přesto je s tematickým materiálem zacházeno volně, typický je téměř atematický rozvoj materiálu postupným přidáváním dalších myšlenek. Z hlediska uplatnění metody kadence ve dvanáctitónovém poli spatřujeme jasný předěl mezi první a druhou větou. Zatímco v první větě je dvanáctitónová řada uplatněna pouze na několika místech, a to ve vertikální, tedy harmonické poloze, ve větě druhé Podešva staví celý proud hudby na dvanáctitónové řadě, kterou rozděluje do čtyř skupin – akordů, které označuje za relativní konsonanty a disonanty. S tímto materiálem pak pracuje dle zmíněných metod, zatím však v omezené míře, zejména s vertikální syntézou kadence. V kontrastu s tím uplatňuje autor místy čistě tonální melodiku. To stejné lze říci o harmonické složce skladby. Vedle postupů v rozšířené tonalitě, na kterých stojí zejména první věta, užívá Podešva téměř čisté (opět svým způsobem) dodekafonické práce a ojediněle tonálních míst. Rytmická složka a její způsob zápisu je více či méně tradiční, občas se objevují místa, zejména v kulminačníc

h částech, která vycházejí z postupů malé aleatoriky. Zde se již dotýkáme také složky zvukové, která vyniká právě v těchto aleatorních místech. Podešvův způsob instrumentace vůbec je nesmírně bohatý a ukazuje na autorovu naprosto jasnou a konkrétní představu o zvuku, kterého chce dosáhnout. Jedná se tedy opravdu o skladatele – symfonika. Ve své třetí symfonii jasně vyjádřil svůj postoj k umění, životu, tvorbě. Tato skladba je pevnou součástí skladatelova vývoje a ukazuje svého tvůrce v roli autora, který vnesl do českého symfonismu 20. století kvalitativně nový prvek, který zdůrazňuje vztah mimohudebního tématu s autonomií hudebního vyjádření.

Abstract:

I defined my task in this thesis very clearly: to show Podešva’s theory of cadence in a twelve-note field right in the author’s work or – in other words – to capture Podešva’s characteristic style of tonal dodecaphony in the Symphony No. 3. I analyzed this symphony using a classic method of analysis of form, melody, harmony, rhythm, and instrumentation – simply put an analysis of its structure in general. However, it is necessary to adjust the approach to an analysis of a piece composed by an author from the twentieth century to its particular style, way of musical notation, particular piece, and the author. Therefore, my analysis is directly tied to this Podešva’s theory, and it is then part of it. Based on this complex approach, I was able to draw conclusions that are the outcome of this thesis (see below). In the introduction, I also present a music parallel as a form very typical of composers. In an analysis of the composer’s theoretical work I attempted to clarify what the principle of this form lies in; it is not in following details of mostly a literary model but in creating a parallel equivalent in which the composer tries to capture the basic meaning of at least one aspect, key point or a detail of the model. For his own works Podešva often found inspiration in literature, and it was Bohumil Hrabal to whom, as an author, he got closest in terms of his ideas. He composed three symphonic parallels based on Hrabal’s themes; besides the Third Symphony (its second movement), it is also a buffo-ballet, a pantomime Bambini di Praga from 1968, and Slavnosti sněženek aneb pocta Bohumilu Hrabalovi aneb absolutně programní hudba pro velký orchestr from 1980 (Slavnosti sněženek or a tribute to Bohumil Hrabal or absolutely program music for a big orchestra). The mutual relation of both the artists is demonstrated also in the correspondence edition which refers to the three works presented above. The Third Symphony was finished in 1966 which was right when the composer obviously and intentionally started to apply his own methods of tonal dodecaphony that he defined later in an essay „Možnosti kadence ve dvanáctitónovém poli“ (Possibilities of Cadence in a Twelve-tone Field) from 1974. This essay was an attempt to generalize his method of composing from 1966–1969. The author also mentioned that this symphony was a result of his scholarship in the USA, Paris, and England. Its first part called Kulminace (Culmination) is based on a text by Milan Kundera while the second part – Perla na dně (Pearl on the Bottom) – is based on an article from a discussion called Na struně mezi kolíbkou a rakví (On a String between a Cradle and a Coffin) from a symposium on criticism which was published in Literární noviny. Both the literary examples deal with the same issue while each author views a meaning of human existence in his own individual way. Podešva here portrays these ideas in form of music. So much for the sources of inspiration. Now, I would like to sum up the outcome of my own work. For the analysis, I used both a printed score of the piece published by Panton publishing and one of the two existing recordings of the piece by Brno Philharmonic conducted by Jiří Waldhans. The two-movement symphony clearly contains features of a symphonic cycle within both the movements. In spite of this, its thematical material is dealt with freely, and typically the material is developed almost athematically by gradually adding further ideas. In terms of applying the cadence method in a twelve-tone field, there is a clear divide between the first and second movements. While in the first movement the twelve-tone line is applied only at several places and in a vertical, i.e. harmonical position, in the second movement Podešva builds the whole flow of music on a twelve-tone line which he divided into four groups/chords that he calls relative consonants and disonants. according to the methods mentioned here, only to a limited extent, though, mainly with a vertical synthesis of cadence. In contrast, the author now and then applies a purely tonal melody. The same goes for the harmonic aspects of the piece. Besides the procedures in an expanded tonality that mainly the first movement stands on, Podešva uses almost pure (again, in his own specific way) dodecaphonic works and, rarely, tonal places as well. The rhythmical part and the way it is put in the score is more or less conventional; however, there are some places, mainly in the culmination parts, that are based on principles of a small aleatronic composition. This is close to the audio part which is remarkable especially in these aleatronic places. Podešva’s way of instrumentation in general is immensely rich and proves that the author has an absolutely clear and specific idea of the sound he would like to achieve. He truly is a composer-symphonist. In his third symphony, Podešva clearly demonstrated his approach to art, life, and creation. This piece is a solid part of his development as a composer, and it shows him as an author who brought into the Czech symphonism of the twentieth century a new element in terms of quality. This element highlights a relation of an extramusical theme with autonomy of musical expression.
