Analysis of symbiotic relations of caridean shrimps (Decapoda) associated with scleractinian corals of the Indo-West Pacific area

Abstract:

Krevety asociované s korály tvoří důležitou součást druhové diverzity korálových útesů Indo-Západotichomořské geografické oblasti. Většina korálobiontních krevet je řazena do čeledi Palaemonidae (především podčeledi Pontoniinae). Menší část korálobiontů nalezneme také v čeledích Alpheidae a Hippolytidae. Hostiteli těchto krevet se nejčastěji stávají koráli z řádu Scleractinia, a to především rody Acropora, Pocillopora, Seriatopora, Stylophora a Galaxea. Objasnění konkrétních symbiotických vztahů mezi krevetami a korály není jednoduché a neexistuje mnoho prací, zabývajících se touto tématikou. Z dostupných zdrojů je však patrné, že se pravděpodobně jedná o vztahy komenzální, mutualistické či parazitické, přičemž mohou být časté i komplexy těchto vztahů. K symbiotickému způsobu života si krevety vytvořily mnohé adaptace. Nejčastěji se jedná o morfologické adaptace celkového tvaru těla, tělních výběžků a koncových článků (daktylů) kráčivých končetin. Také vytvoření specifického chování symbiotických krevet a vznik sociálních skupin by se dalo nazvat jako tzv. behaviorální adaptace. Těmto adaptacím je v předkládané práci věnována hlavní pozornost.

Abstract:

Shrimps associated with corals are an important part of the species diversity of coral reefs of the Indo-West Pacific biogeographic area. Most coral-associated shrimps belong to the family Palaemonidae (especially the subfamily Pontoniinae). We can also found a smaller part of coral commensal shrimps in the families Alpheidae and Hippolytidae. The hosts of these shrimps most often become corals of the order Scleractinia, especially the genera Acropora, Pocillopora, Seriatopora, Stylophora and Galaxea. Understanding of specific symbiotic relationships between shrimps and corals is not easy and there are many studies dealing with this matter. From the available reports, it is evident that the commensal, mutualistic or parasitic relationships are highly frequent in coral environments, and often they represent only a part of diverse complexes of these relationships. The symbiotic way of life have created a lot of adaptations of these shrimps. Most often, these morphological adaptations deal with the body shape, body processes, and especially with morfology of terminal segments of walking legs. In addition to those, specific behaviors reflected in different social groups of symbiotic shrimps could be regarded as behavioral adaptations. These adaptations, of coral-associated shrimps represent the main object of the present work.
