John Rawls and luck egalitarianism: two distinct approaches to distributive justice

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá problematikou distributivní spravedlnosti. Podle Johna Rawlse mají být výhody ze společenské kooperace rozděleny ku maximálnímu možnému prospěchu nejméně zvýhodněných (zjednodušeně nejchudších). V reakci na Rawlse byly v prostředí angloamerické normativní politické filosofie formulovány (u nás nereflektované) teorie označované "zastřešujícím" pojmem 'luck egalitarianism' (zde egalitarismus 'náhody'), podle nichž spravedlnost vyžaduje v první řadě kompenzovat morálně arbitrární znevýhodnění (tzn. ta, jež jsme nemohli ovlivnit: nedostatek vrozené talentovanosti, který nás znevýhodňuje na trhu práce, nešťastná náhoda apod.). V práci se zabývám Rawlsovým druhým principem spravedlnosti a koncepcemi dvěma egalitaristů 'náhody', Ronalda Dworkina a Geralda Cohena; následně Rawlse a egalitaristy 'náhody' srovnávám. Rawls a egalitaristé 'náhody' se neshodnou, nakolik významná je pro teorii spravedlnosti "praktická" naplnitelnost jejích principů. Dále, zatímco egalitaristé 'náhody' pokládají za nespravedlivou distribuci statků, jež je morálně arbitrární, Rawls trvá na důsledné neutralitě státu k různým pojetím dobra; mezi těmito záměry existuje napětí, nikoli však triviální. "Morálně arbitrární" lze v daném kontextu číst jako "nezasloužená"; co je "zasloužené" či "nezasloužené", egalitaristé 'náhody' neodvozují bezprostředně z nějaké specifické koncepce dobra, lze však zpochybňovat, že by egalitarismus 'náhody' mohl být k různým pojetím dobra ve "výsledku" neutrální (alespoň tak jako Rawls). V neposlední řadě se Rawls a egalitaristé 'náhody' neshodnou, zda je (více) problematické se při hledání principů distributivní spravedlnosti pokusit stanovit, jaká znevýhodnění jsou morálně arbitrární (jak se o to pokouší egalitaristé 'náhody'), nebo na to zcela rezignovat (jak na to rezignuje Rawls).

Abstract:

The main concern of this thesis is the recent debate about distributive justice. John Rawls holds that inequalities should be arranged so that they are to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged (the poorest). Rawls stressed the importance of moral arbitrary facts' effects on distribution of goods, but was criticised by so called luck egalitarians, who state that in accordance to justice, we should redress or compensate moral arbitrary disadvantages as such (disadvantages we are in some sense not directly responsible for: lack of natural talents talents in high demand on the market bad luck etc.), which was not Rawls' claim. My purpose is to discuss Rawls' second principle of justice and theories of two luck egalitarians, Ronald Dworkin and Gerald Cohen; then, I compare Rawls and luck egalitarians. Rawls and luck egalitarians disagree about how important the feasibility of principles of justice is for valuing them. Moreover, while luck egalitarians claim that distribution of goods should not be influenced by moral arbitrary facts, Rawls insists that we should be neutral between competing conceptions of the good; there is some tension between these aims, however, this tension cannot be trivially explained. Moral arbitrary means something like "undeserved"; despite the fact that luck egalitarians don't impose any particular conception of the good, in accordance with which distributions would be evaluated as "deserved" or "undeserved", they cannot remain neutral between competing conceptions of the good (at least in the way Rawls can). And last but not least, Rawls prefers to avoid controversies about what specifically is moral arbitrary; luck egalitarians think (or must assume) it is a mistake.
