Citation analysis as a tool in conference impact evaluation: A case study of ECIL

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá hodnocením vědy a jeho vztahem k publikačnímu chování vědců a vědkyň. Jejím cílem je identifikovat změny v publikačním chování účastníků konference, které lze interpretovat právě jako důsledek jejich příslušnosti k této akademické komunitě. Zkoumání těchto změn částečně vychází z nároků, které na publikační činnost vědeckých pracovníků vyvíjejí mocenské orgány a ze způsobů, jak je tato měřena a hodnocena. První kapitola poskytuje vhled do problematiky hodnocení vědy, přičemž se soustředí především na důvody a způsoby jejího hodnocení na různých rozhodovacích úrovních. Druhá kapitola představuje základní scientometrické indikátory, které lze pro hodnocení vědy použít. Třetí kapitola se zabývá různými aspekty publikačního chování, z kterých následně vychází analýza provedená v rámci čtvrté kapitoly. Analyzovány byly změny publikačního chování účastníků a účastnic konference ECIL, a to z hlediska kvantity publikací, inklinaci autorů a­ autorek ke spoluautorství a měřitelného dopadu jejich publikací.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with evaluation of science and its relation to publishing behaviour of scientists. Its aim is to identify changes in the publishing behavior of conference participants that can be interpreted as a consequence of their membership of this academic community. The examination of these changes is partly based on the demands made by the authorities on the publishing activities of scientists, and on the methods of their measurement and evaluation. The first chapter provides insight into science evaluation, focusing primarily on the reasons and the ways of evaluation at different levels. The second chapter presents basic scientometric indicators that can be used for evaluation of science. The third chapter deals with various aspects of publishing behavior, which serve as a basis for the analysis carried out in the fourth chapter. Changes of the publishing behavior of participants of the ECIL were analyzed in terms of the quantity of publications, authors' involvement in co-authorship, and the measurable impact of their publications.
