Roma culture influence on pregnancy and birth

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce je zjistit vliv romské kultury na těhotenství a porod, dále popsat tradiční romskou rodinu a jejich vztah k mateřství a rodičovství. Metodika: Pro dosaţení stanovených cílů byla zvolena kvalitativní výzkumná metoda deskriptivní kasuistiky u záměrně vybraných dvou těhotných romských ţen. Výsledky: Z obou kazuistik je zřejmé, ţe i těhotenství a porod jsou ovlivněny romskou kulturou. Přesto se z velké části projevil i vliv majoritní společnosti. Pro Romky je typické, a u obou ţen se to potvrdilo, ţe jsou během porodu citlivé a hodně emotivní. Vyţadují neustálou pozornost, přejí si, aby porod proběhl rychle a bezbolestně, ale se zdravotnickým personálem nespolupracují. Závěr: Vztah mezi minoritní a majoritní společností je zaloţen hlavně na vzájemné toleranci. Porodní asistentky by měly přistupovat k Romským rodičkám s vědomím toho, ţe jejich chování je ovlivněno výchovou v rodině, kulturou a tradicemi. Pro praxi je důleţitá spolupráce mezi zdravotnickou a sociální sloţkou. Doporučujeme úzkou spolupráci romského asistenta, který se mezi Romy pohybuje nejvíc a terénní porodní asistentkou v komunitních sluţbách.

Abstract:

The aim : The aim of this work is to find out the influence of Romany culture on pregnancy and delivery and to describe a traditional Romany family and their attitude to maternity and parenthood . Methodology : The qualitative research method of descriptive casuistry at two intentionally selected pregnant Romany women was chosen to achieve the defined aim. Results : Both casuistries show that even pregnancy and delivery are influenced by Romany culture . Nevertheless the influence of majority society has become evident from the most part . A typical Romany woman is very sensitive and emotional during delivery and this research proves this . They demand permanent attention , they want the delivery to be fast and painless but they do not cooperate with the medical staff . Conclusion : The relationship between minority and majority society is based on the mutual toleration. Midwives should treat Romany women in labour with the konwledge that their behaviour is influenced by the upbringing, culture and traditions. Cooperation between medical and social factor is important for the practice . We recommend close cooperation of Romany assistant who spends most time among them and a field midwife in the community service .
