Demand estimation using Machine Learning methods

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce bolo aplikovať vybrané metódy strojového učenia spolu s tradičným modelom časových rád ARIMA za účelom odhadu popávky. Literárna rešerš poskytuje prehľad minulých a súčastných trendov v tejto oblasti. V sekcií zaoberajúcej sa dátami a metodológiou opisujeme dáta, evaluačné metriky a metódy, ktoré sú použité v záverečnej kapitole. Presnosť modelov je ohodnotená a porovnávaná na základe strednej kvadratickej chyby (MSE), strednej absolútnej chyby (MAE) and odmocniny zo strednej kvadratickej chyby (RMSE). Na základe výsledkov môžeme konštatovať, že metódy strojového učenia vykazujú lepšie predikčné schopnosti ako model ARIMA. Výsledky taktiež ukazujú, že ensemble metódy ako Random Forest a Gradient Boost najpresnejšie zachytávajú základné tvary a temporálne zmeny v dátach.

Abstract:

The goal of the bachelor thesis is to apply several Machine Learning methods alongside with a traditional time series ARIMA model for the problem of demand estimation. The literature review provides an overview of past and current trends in the concerned field. The data and methodology section describes the data, evaluation metrics, and methods used in the final chapter. The prediction accuracy of each model is compared and evaluated using MSE, MAE, and RMSE. On the basis of the results, it is stated that Machine Learning methods - compared to the ARIMA model - provide superior performance accuracy. Furthermore, the results show that ensemble methods in Machine Learning, Random Forest and Gradient Boost capture the underlying patterns and temporal variations in the data most accurately.
