This thesis aims to explore the change in Sophie Hatter's personality throughout Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle as she transforms from a timid and self-conscious young girl to a more confident and assertive person. The first part of the thesis explores the effects of fairytales on fantasy literature and how those effects appear in Howl’s Moving Castle. Second, as Howl’s Moving Castle falls into both fantasy and children's literature, the thesis places the novel in the context of other works of the same genre. Lastly, it introduces and examines So-phie's character before and after being cursed in relation to her relationships and interactions with other characters and how these relationships influence her behaviour.
