Flabellum of Tournus

Abstract:

Flabellum z Tournus je liturgický vějíř z druhé poloviny 9. století, vytvořený pro řád sv. Filiberta. Bylo používáno k ochraně eucharistie před hmyzem, zároveň při liturgii představovalo křídla archanděla Michaela ochraňující eucharistii před ďábelskými silami. Tato práce na základě stylové analýzy a vztahu mezi řádem sv. Filiberta, Karlem II. Holým a opatstvím Saint-Denis navrhuje, že Flabellum vzniklo v letech 868 až 875 v dílně při Saint-Denis. Dále se studie zaměřuje na vztah mezi funkcí předmětu, který se rozkládal a ovíval eucharistii, a ikonografií, na které se mimo jiné objevují lokální světci a scény vycházející z Vergiliovy poezie. Ikonografie představuje směřování ke zlatému věku, které metaforicky reprezentuje únik řádu sv. Filiberta před Normany a záchranu nalezenou v Tournus, kde se řád nakonec usídlil. Práce dochází k závěru, že scény jsou aktivovány při liturgii, kdy Flabellum pravidelnými pohyby ovívá eucharistii. V té chvíli je jím eucharistie ochraňována podobně jako je řád sv. Filiberta chráněn v Tournus před Normany.

Abstract:

The Flabellum of Tournus is a liturgical fan from the second half of the ninth century, created for the Order of St. Philibert. It was used to keep the insects away from the Eucharist, and at the same time, during the liturgy, it represented the wings of the archangel Michael guarding the Eucharist from diabolical powers. Based on a formal analysis and the relationship between the Order of St. Philibert, Charles II the Bald, and the abbey of Saint-Denis, we propose that the Flabellum was created between 868 and 875 in a workshop at Saint-Denis. Furthermore, the study focuses on the relationship between the function of the object, which unfolded and fanned the Eucharist, and the iconography, which, among other motifs, features local saints and scenes based on Virgil's poetry. The iconography represents the progress towards the Golden Age, metaphorically corresponding to the escape of the Order of St. Philibert from the Normans and the rescue the order found at Tournus, where it eventually settled. The thesis concludes that the images are activated during the liturgy, when the Flabellum fans the Eucharist with regular movements. At that moment, the Flabellum protects the Eucharist, just as the Order of St. Philibert is protected at Tournus from the Normans.
