Sociology of bad smell

Abstract:

The main objective of this thesis is to elucidate vulgarity of odors in contemporary society. The work focuses on the development of perception of smell and it position in the historical and geographical context. It also outlines the relationship between formation of modernity and significant transformation of the perception of odors in history. The first part discuses the historical perception of odors until a period of modernity. The second describes industrialization and its impact on hygienisation. The last part is the excursion into unexplored sociology of odors, discussing the impact of modernity on today's perception of odors and the formation of genders, races and classes.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom diplomovej práce je obozrejmiť neslušnosť zápachov v súčasnej spoločnosti. Práca sa zameriava na vývoj vnímania čuchu a na jeho umiestnenie v historickom a geografickom kontexte. Načrtáva vzťah medzi formovaním modernity a historicky výraznou premenou vnímania zápachov. V prvej časti práce je rozobrané historické vnímanie zápachov po obdobie modernity. V druhej je opísaná industrializácia a jej vplyv na hygienizáciu. Posledná časť je exkurziou do neprebádanej sociológie pachov, rozoberá vplyv modernity na dnešné vnímanie pachov a na formovanie pohlavia, rás, tried.
