Cognitive approach in archaeology: Dynamic performances in the Stone Age

Abstract:

The research questions regarding the majority of any social phenomenon, especially those that are lacking a material base, are one of the most difficult issues in the archaeological context. Within this category one could without doubt also find several forms of dynamic movement performances, e.g. dance. Any evidence present are usually scarce, and always secondary, depicted through artistic expression. This thesis is addressing the possibilities and methods, that can be used while approaching this topic. The pre-dominantly theoretical orientation of the paper is reflected in the implemented methodology, i.e. the methods applied in the cognitive-archaeological research, an archaeological subdiscipline that merges knowledge from a vast spectrum of scientific fields. The presented results, often grounded in psychology, neurosciences, or sociology, thus form a verifiable framework, that is used to either approve or disapprove the validity of several claims. Other than the actual analysis of the stone age dance practices in the Central Europe, the partial goal is to introduce this particular scientific approach and point out its usability within the broader archaeological practice.

Abstract:

Problematika väčšiny spoločenských javov, obzvlášť tých bez pevnej materiálnej základne, patrí v archeologickom kontexte k interpretačne najzložitejším problémom. Do tejto kategórie možno nepochybne zaradiť aj dynamické pohybové performancie, resp. tanec, ktorého dôkazy sú mimoriadne striedme a vždy sekundárne, zachytené majoritne prostredníctvom výtvarného prejavu. Možnosťami ako sa s touto problematikou vysporiadať sa zaoberá predložená dizertačná práca. Dominantne teoretické zameranie sa tak odráža vo využitých metódach tzv. kognitívnej archeológie, t.j. archeologickej subdisciplíny čerpajúcej vedomosti z rozličného spektra výskumných odborov. Prezentované výsledky, podložené poznatkami psychológie, neurológie či sociológie, tvoria vedecky verifikovateľný interpretačný rámec, čím potvrdzujú, alebo vyvracajú validitu mnohých predpokladov. Okrem samotnej analýzy tanca v stredoeurópskej dobe kamennej tak práca čiastkovo slúži aj ako predstavenie tejto, možno netradičnej výskumnej disciplíny a poukazuje na možnosti jej implementácie v širšej archeologickej praxi.
