Abstract:

Tato disertační práce zkoumá rozdíly mezi mírami inflace stanovenými pomocí indexů cen online (OPI) a indexem spotřebitelských cen (CPI) v Německu v letech 2019 až 2023 a zaměřuje se na rostoucí vliv online maloobchodu a konkrétně společnosti Amazon Germany na vývoj cen. Studie ukazuje, že online ceny mají obvykle nižší míru inflace než offline ceny, což odráží odlišnou dynamiku spotřebitelského chování a rozdílnou rychlost reakce online a offline trhů na ekonomické vlivy. Podstatná část této analýzy se zabývá substitučním efektem, kdy spotřebitelé v důsledku růstu cen přecházejí k levnějším alternativám. Váhováním OPI podle prodaných položek studie poskytuje přesnější vyjádření inflace a zachycuje skutečné nákupní chování. Tento metodický přístup ukazuje významné rozdíly mezi váženými a neváženými online cenovými indexy v některých kategoriích výrobků, což naznačuje, že tradiční metody měření inflace nemusí adekvátně odrážet rychlé změny ve spotřebitelském chování. Analýza také ukazuje silnou pozitivní korelaci mezi OPI a CPI s nulovým zpožděním, což naznačuje současný pohyb cen. S delším zpožděním však předpovědní schopnost OPI klesá, což podtrhuje jeho omezenou užitečnost jako ukazatele inflace zaměřeného do budoucna. Výsledky zdůrazňují potřebu zahrnout údaje o cenách online do oficiálních měr inflace, aby poskytovaly přesnější obraz ekonomické reality, zejména s ohledem na pokračující růst online obchodování. Studie doporučuje větší začlenění údajů o online cenách do měření inflace a vyzývá tvůrce politik, aby tato zjištění zahrnuli do ekonomického plánování a rozhodování a lépe tak odráželi dynamiku moderních spotřebitelských trhů.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the discrepancies between the inflation measures deter-mined by online price indices (OPI) and the consumer price index (CPI) in Germany from 2019 to 2023 and focuses on the increasing influence of online retailing and spe-cifically Amazon Germany on price developments. The study shows that online prices typically have lower inflation rates than offline prices, reflecting the different dynamics in consumer behaviour and the different reac-tion speed of online and offline markets to economic influences. An essential part of this analysis deals with the substitution effect, where consumers switch to cheaper al-ternatives due to price increases. By weighting the OPI by items sold, the study pro-vides a more accurate representation of inflation and captures actual purchasing behav-iour. This methodological approach shows significant differences between weighted and unweighted online price indices in certain product categories, suggesting that tra-ditional methods of measuring inflation may not adequately reflect rapid changes in consumer behaviour. The analysis also shows a strong positive correlation between OPI and CPI at a lag of zero, indicating a simultaneous price movement. However, the pre-dictive power of the OPI decreases over longer lags, underlining its limited usefulness as a forward-looking inflation indicator. The results underline the need to incorporate online price data into official inflation measures to provide a more accurate picture of economic reality, especially as online trade continues to grow. The study recommends greater integration of online price in-dices into inflation metrics and calls on policy makers to incorporate these findings into economic planning and decision making to better reflect the dynamics of modern consumer markets.
