Aspects of Newton-Cartan gravity

Anotace:

V posledním desetiletí se do širšího fyzikálního povědomí opět začala překvapivě dostávat nerelativistická gravitace. Důvodů pro tento zájem je několik. Jedním je například hledání teorie kvantové gravitace, kde byla právě cesta skrz nerelativistickou gravitaci dlouho opomíjena. Dalšími důvody může být holografie a popis systému ve fyzice kondenzovaných látek, kde se předpokládá, že duální teorie jsou teorie nerelativistické gravitace. Tato práce se zabývá převážně Newton-Cartanovou gravitací, což je jednoduše řečeno Newtonova nerelativistická gravitace zapsaná v kovariantním zápisu. V práci pokládáme matematické základy pro tuto specifickou teorii gravitace a řešíme její vztah s obecnou teorií relativity. Dále v práci řešíme nerelativistickou strunovou teorii, kde Newton-Cartanova geometrie má význačné místo. Hlavními výsledky práce jsou formulace akce pro nerelativistickou M2-brane a následná kanonická analýza a také systematický rozvoj Einstein-Hilbertovy akce v parametru souvisejícím s rychlostí světla pro libovolnou foliaci časoprostoru. Výsledky byly publikovány v časopisech Journal of High Energy Physics a Physical Review D.

Abstract:

In the last decade there was a renewed interest in the theory of non-relativistic gravity among the theoretical physicists. There are several reasons for this interest. One of them is searching for the theory of quantum gravity, where the direction through the theory of non-relativistic gravity was not considered. Another reason could be holography and a description of the system in the condense matter physics, where it is assumed, that the dual theory should be theory of non-relativistic gravity. The focus of this thesis is mainly the Newton-Cartan gravity, which is loosely speaking the Newton gravity written in the covariant notation. In the thesis we discuss the mathematical foundations of this non-relativistic theory of gravity and connect them to the theory of General relativity. Also we discuss the non-relativistic string theory, where a specific type of Newton-Cartan geometry serves as target space geometry. The main results of this thesis are an action for non-relativistic M2-brane and its canonical analysis and the systematic expansion of the Einstein-Hilbert action in the parameter depending on the speed of light for an arbitrary foliation of the space-time. The results were published in following journals: Journal of High Energy Physics and Physical Review D.
