Censorship in the context of theatricality and theory of power

Abstract:

The master’s thesis entitled “Censorship in the Context of Theatricality and Theory of Power” explores the contemporary forms of censorship in the society and, using the example of the relationship between theatricality and Michel Foucault’s original concept of power and power relations, encompasses many scientific disciplines and interweaves the issue of power with politics, law, morality, art, leadership, truth and norms. The structure of the thesis is based on conceptual definitions and a brief retrospect of historical thinking on the phenomena being explored and places emphasis on seeking intersections between the meaning of censorship, theatricality and the theory of power. The work pursues the objective of finding and deciphering hidden meanings of the existence of censorship and, using the plays “Naše násilie a vaše násilie” [Our violence and your violence] by the theater Mladinsko Gledališče from Slovenia, “Kováči” [The Blacksmiths] by the Ján Chalupka Theatre Company from Brezno and “Klatwa” by the Polish Teatr Powszechny as case studies, analyses the influence of power and censorship on the performance of an artistic work and its existence in the public space, the power image of which is often the cause of these phenomena. This master’s thesis is an introductory attempt at a deeper research into the intersections between philosophical thinking and the thinking of art and culture management in the subject under consideration, which focuses on an analysis of, and the need for, censorship in contemporary art.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca s názvom „Cenzúra v kontexte teatrality a teórie moci“ sa zaoberá skúmaním súčasných podôb cenzúry v spoločnosti a na príklade vzťahov medzi teatralitou a originálnou koncepciou moci a mocenských vzťahov Michela Foucaulta, ktorá zasahuje množstvo vedných odborov a problematiku moci prepletá s politikou, právom, morálkou, umením, vedením, pravdou, normami. Štruktúra diplomovej práce vychádza z pojmových definícií, krátkych dejín historického myslenia v skúmaných fenoménoch a dôraz kladie na hľadanie významových prienikov medzi cenzúrou, teatralitou a teóriou moci. Práca si kladie za cieľ nachádzať a dešifrovať skryté významy existencie cenzúry a na príklade prípadových štúdií divadelných inscenácií “Naše násilie a vaše násilie” divadla Mladinsko Gledališče zo Slovinska, “Kováči” divadelného súboru Jána Chalupku z Brezna a “Klatwa” poľského Teatru Powszechny analyzovať vplyv moci a cenzúry na výkon umeleckého diela a jeho existenciu vo verejnom priestore, ktorého mocenský obraz je častokrát príčinou týchto javov. Diplomová práca je úvodným pokusom pre hlbší výskum prienikov filozofického myslenia a myslenia managementu umenia a kultúry v skúmanej téme, ktorej dôraz je kladený na analýzu a potrebu cenzúry v súčasnom umení.
