Aspects of Feminism in Selected Works by Sylvia Plath

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce Aspekty feminismu ve vybraných dílech Sylvie Plathové je analýza díla Sylvie Plathové v kontextu druhé vlny feminismu. Ačkoliv se Plathová nikdy otevřeně nepovažovala za feministku, ve své próze a poezii kritizovala postavení ženy ve společnosti v padesátých letech minulého století. Práce se skládá ze tří částí. První část se zabývá vznikem a historií druhé vlny feminismu, druhá část je věnovaná životě a dílu Sylvie Plathové a třetí část se zaměřuje na analýzu díla Plathové a zabývá se tématy jako sexualita, rodina a manželství a hledání identity, které se staly hlavními náměty druhé vlny feminismu. Předpokládaným závěrem práce je zjistit, do jaké míry Plathové dílo odpovídá principům druhé vlny feminismu šedesátých let minulého století.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis Aspects of Feminism in Selected Works by Sylvia Plath is to analyze Sylvia Plath´s works in the context of the second wave of feminism. Although Plath never openly considered herself a feminist, in her prose and poetry she criticized women’s social status in the 1950s. The thesis consists of three parts. The first part deals with the emergence and history of the second wave of feminism, the second part is devoted to the life and works of Sylvia Plath and the third part focuses on analyzing Plath works covering topics such as sexuality, family and marriage and search for identity, which became the main issues of the second wave of feminism. The anticipated outcome of the thesis is to find out to what extent Plath’s work corresponds to the principles of the second wave of feminism in the 1960s.
