Between Reproduction and Change: Gender Identity in the Perspective of Poststructural Discourse Analysis

Abstract:

Disertační práce je sociálně psychologickou diskurzivní analýzou genderových identit. Na teoretické rovině systematizuje a kriticky reflektuje hlavní diskurzivní směry v sociální psychologii (poststrukturální diskurzivní analýza, diskurzivní psychologie, analýza interpretačních repertoárů, kritická diskurzivní psychologie, konverzační analýza) a zasazuje je do kontextu obratu k diskurzu v sociálních a humanitních vědách. Zabývá se zejména komplexními vztahy mezi diskurzivními směry v sociální psychologii, poststrukturální filozofií, poststrukturálním feminismem a teorií performativity. Popisuje způsoby, jimiž uvedené přístupy dospívají ke konceptualizaci genderové identity jako heterogenní, nestabilní a současně povinné re-citace genderových diskurzů a praktik. Výzkumná část disertační práce zkoumá aplikovatelnost a užitečnost poststrukturální diskurzivní analýzy při výzkumu genderové identity. Identifikuje možnosti a limity některých diskurzů, které mají k dispozici mladí, heterosexuální a vysokoškolsky vzdělaní lidé při performanci své genderové identity v rozhovoru. Analýza se zabývá šesti genderovými diskurzy, jejich vzájemným překrýváním a konflikty, pozicemi subjektu a emočními investicemi, které různé diskurzy pro různé sociální subjekty utvářejí, a to primárně z hlediska jejich důsledků pro udržování, či naopak destabilizaci genderové binarity. Uplatňováno je dekonstruktivní čtení rozhovorů, zaměřující se na hledání a rozvrat dichotomické struktury textu a na zviditelnění mnohosti, kontradiktoričnosti a nestability významu. Analýza ukazuje, že i ve zdánlivě jednoznačných a tradičních konstrukcích genderové identity jsou přítomné zdroje narušení genderové binarity, avšak současně upozorňuje na limitovaný rozsah rezistence vůči genderovým požadavkům, jíž identifikované diskurzy umožňují. Práce akcentuje důležitost rozšiřování sociální imaginace vztahující se k genderovému subjektu.

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis represents a social psychological discourse analysis of gender identity. On a theoretical level, the thesis systematizes and critically reflects main discursive approaches in social psychology (poststructural discourse analysis, discursive psychology, analysis of interpretative repertoires, critical discursive psychology, and conversation analysis) and integrates them into the context of turn to discourse in social sciences and humanities. The thesis focuses above all on the complex relationships between discursive approaches in social psychology, poststructural philosophy, poststructural feminism and theory of performativity. It examines the ways, in which these approaches come to theorize gender identity as heterogeneous, continually shifting, yet compulsory re-citation of gender discourses and culture practices. The analytical part of the dissertation thesis examines the applicability and usefulness of poststructural discourse analysis in researching gender identity. It identifies possibilities and limits of some of gender discourses, which are employed by young, heterosexual, Czech women and men with tertiary education in their performance of gender identity in talk. The analysis delimits six gender discourses, together with both their overlapping and conflicts, subject positions and investments, which different discourses produce for different social subjects. The analysis is especially interested in implications of identified discourses for the reproduction or, on the contrary, the destabilization of gender binary. A deconstructive reading is applied in order to locate and deconstruct the dichotomous structure of the text and to make visible inherent plurality, contradictions and instability of employed meanings. As the analysis shows, there are discursive resources enabling resistance to gender binary even within seemingly unambiguous and traditional performance of gender identity. However, the analysis also points out to a seriously limited range of possible resistance to gender norms enabled by identified discourses. The thesis emphasizes the importance of producing and exploring new social imaginary, in particular new versions of gendered subjects.
