Pedagogical content knowledge of English for Specific Purposes university teachers: Perception of professional beginnings in retrospection

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na subjektivně vnímané změny v didaktických znalostech obsahu (DZO) učitelů, a to z jejich retrospektivního pohledu na první tři roky své výuky odborného anglického jazyka (OAJ) na vysokých školách. V České republice procházejí vysokoškolští učitelé OAJ v průběhu prvních let praxe poměrně obtížným obdobím, jelikož v rámci svého studia na vysokých školách byli zpravidla připravováni na středoškolskou výuku obecné angličtiny. Jejich předchozí vzdělání jim tedy neposkytlo řadu znalostí, ze kterých by mohly vytvářet své DZO, a to zejména znalosti vysokoškolské didaktiky, znalosti OAJ a znalosti oboru studia jejich studentů (např. lékařství, strojírenství, právo). Teoretická část práce nejprve seznamuje čtenáře se základními pojmy a poté je text rozdělen do tří kapitol. První kapitola se zaměřuje na profesní vývoj učitelů, přičemž popisuje různé modely tohoto vývoje, procesy profesního učení a výzkumy začínajících učitelů. Druhá kapitola se týká profesních znalostí učitelů a je v souladu s cílem výzkumu zaměřena zejména na fenomén DZO, jednotlivé složky DZO a metodologie výzkumů procesů rozvíjení DZO. Třetí kapitola pojednává o předmětu OAJ na vysokých školách, přičemž popisuje různé klasifikace OAJ a specifika tohoto předmětu v souvislosti s problematikou vysokoškolského vzdělávání. Empirická část práce nejdříve prezentuje cíl výzkumu, výzkumné otázky, design výzkumu a výzkumný vzorek. Poté jsou detailně popsány obě fáze v rámci smíšeného výzkumného designu. Během první kvalitativní fáze proběhl individuální semistrukturovaný rozhovor na téma prvních tří let výuky OAJ na vysoké škole, a to s celkem 14 respondenty – 12 zkušenými učiteli (tři a více let praxe vysokoškolské výuky OAJ) a 2 začínajícími učiteli (méně než tři roky této praxe). Získaná data byla analyzována tematickým kódováním. Na základě výsledků byl v následující kvantitativní fázi sestrojen anonymní elektronický dotazník, který byl rozeslán celému základnímu souboru českých vysokoškolských učitelů OAJ. Dotazník vyplnilo celkem 98 respondentů – 86 zkušených učitelů a 12 začínajících učitelů. Získaná data byla následně zpracována statisticky. Další část práce týkající se výsledků výzkumu je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola se zaměřuje na získaná data v rámci jednotlivých složek DZO – pojetí cílů výuky, znalostí kurikula, znalostí výukových strategií a znalostí o porozumění studentů. Druhá kapitola stručně shrnuje všechny výsledky, zatímco třetí kapitola je porovnává s odbornou literaturou. Informace získané od zkušených učitelů v rámci kvantitativní výzkumné fáze naznačují, že na základě testu dobré shody existovaly určité statisticky významné změny mezi začátkem a koncem prvních tří let, ale pouze ve dvou složkách DZO (pojetí cílů výuky, znalosti výukových strategií). Nicméně byla zjištěna řada dalších změn ve všech složkách DZO, a to porovnáváním absolutních četností na začátku a konci daného období a rovněž obsahovou analýzou v rámci kvalitativní výzkumné fáze. V závěru práce je navrženo teoretické a praktické využití výsledků. Daný výzkum by měl jednak přispět k rozšíření vědecké teorie týkající se procesů rozvíjení DZO, a to v souvislosti s obdobím, kdy se ze středoškolských učitelů obecné angličtiny stávají vysokoškolští učitelé OAJ. Dále by z praktického hlediska měla tato práce seznámit odbornou veřejnost s náročnou situací začínajících vysokoškolských učitelů OAJ způsobenou jejich předchozím nespecificky zaměřeným vzděláváním. Abstract:

The thesis deals with subjectively perceived changes in teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) from their retrospective view of the first three years of their teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at universities. In the Czech Republic, ESP university teachers go through a rather difficult period during the first years of their practice because within their university studies they have usually been prepared for teaching English for General Purposes (EGP) at secondary schools. Therefore, their previous education has not provided them with various kinds of knowledge they could use for forming their PCK, which is particularly the knowledge of university didactics, the knowledge of ESP, and the knowledge of students’ branch of study (e.g. medicine, engineering, law). The theoretical part of the thesis firstly introduces key concepts to the reader and then the text is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is focused on teacher professional development and describes various models of this development, professional learning processes and research into novice teachers. The second chapter is related to teacher professional knowledge and in accordance with the research aim is mainly focused on the phenomenon of PCK, individual components of PCK and methodology of research referring to PCK development. The third chapter deals with ESP subject at universities and describes various classifications of ESP as well as specifics of this subject in connection with the issue of university education. The empirical part of the thesis firstly presents the research aim, research questions, research design, and research sample. Afterwards, both phases within the mixed research design are described in detail. During the first, qualitative phase an individual semistructured interview on the topic of the first three years of teaching ESP at universities was carried out with 14 respondents – 12 experienced teachers (three and more years of teaching ESP at universities) and 2 novice teachers (less than three years of this practice). The obtained data were analysed by thematic coding. In the following quantitative phase, an anonymous electronic questionnaire was created on the basis of these results and sent to the whole population of Czech ESP university teachers. It was completed by 98 respondents – 86 experienced teachers and 12 novice teachers. Subsequently, the obtained data were processed statistically. The next part of the thesis deals with the research results and is divided into three chapters. The first chapter concentrates on the obtained data within the individual components of PCK – conceptions of purposes for teaching subject matter, curricular knowledge, knowledge of instructional strategies, and knowledge of students’ understanding. The second chapter briefly summarizes all the results while the third chapter compares them with professional literature. The information obtained from the experienced teachers within the quantitative research phase indicates that on the basis of Pearson’s chi-square test there were some statistically significant changes between the beginning and the end of the first three years but only in two PCK components (conceptions of purposes for teaching subject matter, knowledge of instructional strategies). However, many other changes in all PCK components have been revealed by comparison of absolute frequencies at the beginning and the end of the period and by content analysis within the qualitative research phase. The theoretical and practical use of the results is proposed in the conclusion of the thesis. The research should contribute to the expansion of the scientific theory dealing with PCK development, specifically in relation to the period when EGP secondary school teachers are becoming ESP university teachers.
