Ošklivka Katka and The Nanny in the light of feminist critiques. A narrative analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou manifestace patriarchátu v soap opeře optikou feministických kritik. Postup narativní analýzy byl uplatněn na český seriál Ošklivka Katka a americkou Chůvu k pohledání. První část vymezuje koncepty soap oper, romantické lásky, patriarchátu, konkrétní genderových stereotypů a (post)feministických kritik. Druhá část je analýzou a interpretací celkové narace obou příběhů, jak hlavní hrdinky dosáhnou naplnění romantické lásky. Jednotlivé části vykazují shodné znaky narušení a vracení se do rovnováhy, až dojde ke šťastnému konci. Narace je konfrontovaná se šablonovitostí romantické lásky, kterou v podstatě analyzované seriály splňují. Na čtyřech genderových stereotypech vztahujících se k hlavním hrdinkám (atraktivita, domácnost, čekání, milostné vztahy) je ukázána manifestace patriarchátu. Závěrečná diskuze patří aplikaci feministických a postfeministických kritik. České pojetí potvrzuje stereotypní chování mužů jako machů, ačkoliv hlavní hrdinka je aktivní ve veřejné sféře. Americké pojetí je odlehčené, ale odkazuje k stereotypům ženy v domácnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on representations of patriarchy in soap operas in the light of feminist and postfeminist critiques. Narrative analysis is applied to the Czech serial Ošklivka Katka and the American The Nanny. The first part of the thesis defines the concepts of soap opera, romantic love, patriarchy, gender specific stereotypes and (post)feminist critiques. The second part is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the overall narrative of both stories and to how the main heroines build romantic love relationships. The narratives of both series demonstrate the same characteristics of disturbance and return to equilibrium and both culminate in a happy ending. The elements of the narration are compared with patterns of romantic love, which they basically meet. The manifestation of patriarchy is indicated in four gender stereotypes related to the main heroines (attractiveness, household, waiting and love relationships). The final discussion includes an exploration of feminist and postfeminist critiques. The Czech series revolves around the stereotypical behavior of men as machos, although the heroine is active in the public sphere. The American version is more lightweight, but it refers to the stereotype of a woman in the household.
