Forming Priors for DSGE Models

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá vliv nastavení priorů na výsledky odhadů DSGE modelů. Pro účel empirické analýzy je DSGE model malé otevřené ekonomiky odhadován na datech české ekonomiky a ekonomiky eurozóny (ta v modelu aproximuje zbytek světa). Odhady jsou prováděny bayesovskými technikami s různými apriorními nastaveními vybraných skupin parametrů a následně je posuzován dopad těchto nastavení na bodové odhady parametrů a na funkce impulzních odezev. V poslední kapitole je model aplikován také na umělá data a jsou zde určeny parametry, u jejichž odhadů je velká citlivost na nastavení priorů pravděpodobná kvůli problematické identifikaci zapříčiněné strukturou modelu.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the influence of the prior specification on the DSGE model estimation results. For the purpose of empirical analysis, a small open economy DSGE model is estimated on the data of the Czech economy and the euro area (the latter approximates the rest of the world in the model). Estimates are carried out by means of Bayesian techniques with varying prior specifications of selected groups of parameters and then, the impact of these specifications on the parameters’ point estimates and the impulse response functions is assessed. In the last chapter, the model is applied also to the artificial data and several parameters are isolated whose estimates are likely to be strongly influenced by the prior specification due to a problematic identification of these parameters caused by a model structure.
