Anti-Ritual: The Trials of the Templars and Late Medieval Ideas about Antinomian Heresy

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se soustředí na konstrukci obrazu antinomického rituálu heretiků (antirituálu), během procesů s templáři ve Francii v letech 1307-1312. Práce argumentuje, že procesy s templáři proběhly v několika fázích a na několika úrovních, a je proto vhodnější mluvit o „procesech“ než o procesu.“ Práce dále argumentuje, že především na biskupské úrovni vyšetřování byl utvářeny komplexní obrazy antirituálu. Práce se dále snaží doložit, že tyto obrazy vzešly ze setkání několika druhů diskursu o středověkých hereticích a jejich praxích. Nejvýznamnější bylo setkání obrazu zvrhlých, odlidštěných templářů, který byl utvořen francouzskou královskou propagandou na počátku královské aféry, a starších představ o katarech a jejich rituálních praxích. Práce dále argumentuje, že k těmto setkáním docházelo během jednotlivých vyšetřování v oblastech jižní Francie. Pokouší se vysvětlit vznik představ o templářském antirituálu nejen v kontextu vztahů mezi politických pozadím procesů a centrálním interrogatoriem vydaným papežem Klementem V., ale také mezi vyšetřovacími strategiemi pozdě středověké inkvizice a interakcí mezi jednotlivými inkvizitory a jejich podezřelými. Argumentuje, že obrazy antirituálu byly nezáměrnými produkty vyšetřování, ne součást propagandistického nebo inkvizitorského plánu. V závěrečné část se práce pokouší umístit údajný templářských antirituál do kontextu fiktivních antinomických herezí 13. a 14. století, a otevřít téma významu údajného templářského antirutálu pro vývoj obrazů heretického libertinismu a uctívání ďábla.

Abstract:

This thesis, entitled Anti-Ritual: The Trials of the Templars and Late Medieval Ideas about Antinomian Heresy, focuses on the construction of the image of the antinomian heretical ritual during the trials of the Templars in France, 1307-1312 (anti-ritual). The thesis argues, that complex images of anti-ritual were being constructed, especially on the episcopal level of the trials. Accoring to the argument, those images emerged from an encounter of several types of discourses concerning medieval heretics and their practices. The most notable of these was the encoutner of the image of the depraved, dehumanized Templars, which was a product of the Philip the Fair’s propaganda at the beginning of the Templar affair, and of older images of catharism and its ritual practice. The thesis argues, that these encounters occured during certain investigations in southern France. It attempts to explain the emergence of the images of the templar anti-ritual not only in terms of the political background of the trials and central interrogatorium emitted by the Pope Clement V., but also in terms of investigational strategies of the late medieval inquisition, and interactions between the individual inquisitors and their suspects. It argues against the prevailing consensus, that the images of the anti-ritual were a non-intentional product of the investigations, not a part of any propagandistic or inquisitional plot. In the final part, the thesis attempts to place the alleged Templar anti-ritual in context of the fictional antinomian heresies of the 13th and 14th century, and discuss its importance for the development of the images of heretical libertinism and Devil worship.
