Fashion Models' Lifestyles in Environmental Contexts

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá environmentálně relevantními aspekty životního způsobu modelek. Snaží se zjistit, jak se profese modelek promítá do jejich životního způsobu a jaký vliv má na jejich spotřebu zboží či ekologickou stopu. V teoretické části práce přináší koncepty týkající se konzumerismu a negativních dopadů módního průmyslu na životní prostředí. V empirické části jsem hledala odpovědi na otázky, zda modelky při nakupování přihlížejí k původu výrobků a dalším produktovým charakteristikám, zda samy sebe vnímají jako fashion leadery, angažují se v environmentálně prospěšných aktivitách a zda se zajímají o environmentální témata. Hlavním nástrojem k získávání dat byl kvalitativní výzkum s polostrukturovanými rozhovory. Výzkumný soubor byl zvolen za použití záměrného kriteriálního výběru. Shromážděná data byla analyzována pomocí zakotvené teorie. Účelem práce je podnítit diskuzi o případných negativních environmentálních vlivech modelingu na životní způsob lidí, kteří jsou s ním spojeni po profesionální stránce. Výsledky výzkumu umožňují vhled do života modelek a mohou sloužit jako podklady pro další zkoumání v dané oblasti.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the environmental relevant aspects of fashion models´ lifestyles. It endeavours to find out how the models´ work is projected into their way of life and how it affects their material consumption or ecological footprint. In the theoretical section the thesis brings concepts concerning consumerism and negative affects of the fashion industry on the environment. In the empirical part I tried to find answers to the questions: How models take account of the origins of goods and other product characteristics while shopping; whether they consider themselves as fashion leaders and if they are involved in environmentally beneficial activities and interested in environmental issues. I mainly used qualitative method and semi-structured interviews to obtain the data. I selected the studied group using targeted sampling. Grounded theory was used to analyze the gathered data. The aim of this thesis is to arouse discussion about potential negative environmental impacts of modelling on the way of life of people who are professionally involved. The research results enable insight into the fashion models´ lives and can serve as a base for further research in this field.
