Bitcoin as an investment instrument and a possible protection of corporate financial assets against inflation

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, zda je bitcoin vhodným investičním nástrojem a uchovatelem hodnoty pro firemní subjekty z důvodu ochrany jejich finančních aktiv před inflací a znehodnocením. Z tohoto důvodu byly nejdříve analyzovány jednotlivé investiční nástroje typu akciového indexu S&P500, zlata, ropy a státních dluhopisů, jejich vývoj v období jednotlivých recesí a krizí a jejich vzájemná korelace. Následně byl na základě historického vývoje ceny analyzován bitcoin za pomoci růstových modelů Stock-to-Flow a logaritmických trendových linií. Výstupem této analýzy jsou predikce vývoje ceny bitcoinu, jeho korelace, rizika, kterým čelí a jeho výhody oproti ostatním investiční nástrojům. Z této práce vyplývá, že bitcoin je relativně výkonným investičním nástrojem, který je spojen s poměrně vysokou volatilitou. Z analýzy také vyplývá, že volatilita, tedy i rizikovost bitcoinu s přílivem nového kapitálu klesá.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to determine whether bitcoin is a suitable investment instrument as a store of value for companies as a means of protection for their financial assets from inflation and devaluation. Therefore, investment instruments such as the S&P 500 stock index, gold, oil, and government bonds were analyzed. Initially, the focus was price development in the period of individual recessions, crises, and their mutual correlation. Subsequently, based on the historical development of the price, bitcoin was analyzed using the Stock-to-Flow growth model and logarithmic trend lines. The conclusions of this analysis are predictions of the development of the price of bitcoin, its correlation, the risks it faces, and its advantages compared to other investment instruments. This assignment indicates that bitcoin is a relatively powerful investment tool, which is associated with relatively high volatility. The analysis also demonstrates that the volatility, i.e. the high risk associated with bitcoin, decreases with the inflow of new capital.
