Spiritual Needs of Oncology Patients

Abstract:

Aim: The goal of the submitted master thesis was to find out the spiritual needs of oncology patients. Furthermore, the aim was to determine if gender, age, marital status, religion and diagnosis affect the spiritual needs and if religiosity will affect the ability of oncology patient to cope with cancer. Methodology: The research was conducted by questionnaire between July 2014 and February 2015, in cancer treatment facility and hemato-oncology department of the University Hospital in Martin and Oncology department of the Central Military Hospital in Ruzomberok. Two questionnaires were used for data gathering; the questionnaire FACIT-Sp-12 and questionnaire ?Spiritual Needs Survey?, supplemented with demographic data. The basic set consists of 102 respondents who suffer from cancer and are over 18 years old. During the research, a total of 130 questionnaires were distributed, but statistic processing included 102 questionnaires, which represents 78%. Results: Respondents with Catholic and Protestant religious beliefs coped with cancer the best, while respondents without religious belief coped the worst. In each subscale, except subscale of death, religious respondents had better values. It can be concluded, that their spiritual needs were fulfilled to a larger extent. The scope of oncology patients spiritual needs is affected by gender, where women have felt more spiritual needs than men. Age infuences spiritual needs, especially in subscales meaning, love ? belonging ? respect and morality and ethics. Marital status didn´t show statistically significant difference in spiritual needs. The biggest differences of diagnosis impact have occured in the subscales of meaning and divine. Conclusion: Spiritual needs are affected by age, gender, religiosity and diagnosis. Marital status doesn´t affect the spiritual needs. Religiosity helps to cope with cancer mainly to women. It was found, that spiritual needs are an important factor in spiritual well-being of patients and therefore, it is crucial to focus on thorough assessment and evaluation of spiritual needs.

Cieľ: Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo zistiť spirituálne potreby onkologických pacientov. Ďalej sme chceli zistiť, či pohlavie, vek, rodinný stav, vierovyznanie a diagnóza ovplyvňujú spirituálne potreby a či religiozita bude mať vplyv na vyrovnávanie sa s onkologickým ochorením. Metodika: Výskum prebiehal formou dotazníkového šetrenia od júla 2014 do februára 2015 v onkologickom centre a na hemato-onkologickom oddelení Univerzitnej nemocnice v Martine a onkologickom oddelení Ústrednej vojenskej nemocnice v Ružomberku. K zberu údajov boli použité dva dotazníky: dotazník FACIT-Sp-12 a dotazník Spiritual Needs Survey, doplnené o demografické údaje. Základný súbor tvorí 102 respondentov s onkologickým ochorením starších ako 18 rokov. Vo výskume bolo rozdaných celkovo 130 dotazníkov, avšak do štatistického spracovania sme zaradili 102 dotazníkov, čo predstavuje 78 %. Výsledky: Najlepšie sa s onkologickým ochorením vyrovnávali respondenti s katolíckym a s evanjelickým vierovyznaním, najhoršie respondenti bez vyznania. V každej subškále okrem subškály smrť a umieranie mali veriaci respondenti vyššie hodnoty, to znamená, že spirituálne potreby boli u nich viac naplnené. Pohlavie ovplyvňuje spirituálne potreby onkologických pacientov a ženy majú viac naplnené spirituálne potreby než muži. Vek ovplyvňuje spirituálne potreby, najmä v subškálach zmysel, láska ? príslušnosť ? rešpekt a morálka a etika. Rodinný stav nepreukázal štatisticky významný rozdiel v spirituálnych potrebách. Najväčšie rozdiely vplyvu diagnóz sa preukázali v subškálach zmysel a duchovno. Záver: Spirituálne potreby sú ovplyvnené vekom, pohlavím, religiozitou a diagnózou. Rodinný stav spirituálne potreby neovplyvňuje. Vierovyznanie pomáha vyrovnať sa s onkologickým ochorením najmä u žien. Zistili sme, že spirituálne potreby sú významným faktorom spirituálnej pohody pacientov a preto je potrebné zamerať sa na dôkladné posudzovanie a hodnotenie spirituálnych potrieb.
