Reproduction of man as a harm

Abstract:

Je hodnota života skutečně tak záporná, že se pro každého člověka stává narození újmou? Filozofický postoj, který zpochybňuje kladnou hodnotu lidské existence a navrhuje tak ukončit proces další reprodukce lidské rasy se nazývá antinatalismus. Antinatalismus navrhuje postupný odchod lidstva vstříc nicotě postupným a dobrovolným vymíráním. Cílem antiantalismu je předcházet utrpení. Jelikož jsme my - lidé, bytosti, které jsou si vědomy vlastní smrti, tak by bylo možná lepší tento svět ani neuzřít, stejně tak utrpení v tomto světě. Jedním z hlavních argumentů proč tak máme činit je naše povinnost nečinit neznámému člověku nežádané dobro, ale upřednostňovat postup negativního utilitarismu, čili předcházet bolesti a utrpení. Pokud člověk neexistuje, nehrozí mu strasti a netrápí ho ani nedostatek slasti. Je možné tato tvrzení nezlomně obhájit? Někteří myslitelé jsou o tom přesvědčeni. Antinatalisté prezentují přesvědčení, že zplodit dítě i s tím nejlepším úmyslem je zbytečně vysoký risk. Je třeba vzít v úvahu, že nemůžeme vědět jaká budoucnost naše dítě čeká, a může to být budoucnost bolestivá, násilná a plná utrpení. Někteří myslitelé však ať už v reakci přímo na antinatalismus, nebo také na základní otázky smyslu života tvrdí, že i přes všechny námitky stojí za to se narodit a žít. Jejich námitky, námitky jejich oponentů a možná rozhřešení jsou prezentovány v této práci.

Abstract:

Is the value of life indeed so negative that the act of being born condemns the individual to suffer? The philosophical stance that questions the positive value of human existence and proposes the termination of further human reproduction is called antinatalism. It suggests that mankind's departure off this Earth should be achieved by a gradual and voluntary extinction process. Thus, the ultimate goal of antinatalism is to prevent suffering. Since we humans are creatures that realize our own mortality, it would therefore be better not to experience this world and all the suffering contained in it. One of the main arguments for doing so is our responsibility to not cause unwanted good to unknown persons, but instead favor the process of negative utilitarianism, hence preventing pain and suffering outright. If a person does not exist, he is never faced with danger nor does he suffer from a lack of pleasure. But can these claims be defended? Some thinkers are convinced of it. Antinatalists put forth the idea that birthing children is an unnecessarily high risk even with the best of intentions. Because it should be taken into consideration that we cannot predict what the future will hold for our child, and it could be a future filled with pain, violence and suffering. However, some thinkers, whether in direct response to antinatalism or to the basic question about the meaning of life, claim that despite all objections it is definitely worthwhile to be born and to experience life. Their objections, the objections of their opponents and possible solutions are presented in this thesis.
