The Conflict between the Role of a Woman as a Mother and as an Intellectual Being as Portrayed in the Works of A. S. Byatt and Margaret Drabble

Anotace:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce je koncipována jako komparativní studie pěti literárních postav žen a jejich dilematu mezi mateřstvím a intelektuálním rozvojem. Toto téma je analyzováno v románech Antonie Susan Byatt (Panna v zahradě, Zátiší, Babylónská věž a Když žena píská) a Margaret Drabble (Zářivá cesta, Přirozená zvědavost, Brána ze slonoviny). V práci zkoumám pět literárních postav žen, které reprezentují určitý „typ“ ženy, který může být generalizován a který popisuje určitý způsob chování některých žen. Tyto literární postavy jsou: Frederica Potter (Reiver) a Stephanie Potter (Orton) v tetralogii A. S. Byatt, a Alix Bowen, Esther Breuer a Elizabeth Headleand v trilogii Margaret Drabble. Hlavní stať práce analyzuje postoj k manželství a budování kariéry těchto pěti literárních postav a porovnává jejich rozhodnutí a jednání. Každá kapitola práce se zabývá jednou z postav a je rozdělena do dvou částí – první část zkoumá postoj a jednání dané postavy a druhá část nabízí srovnání této postavy s ostatními postavami. Finální porovnání všech postav ukazuje, že obě autorky zobrazily ve svých dílech bohatou škálu životních zkušeností žen a různé způsoby, jak se vyrovnat s rozličnými životními situacemi. Zobrazením těchto postav autorky zdůrazňují důležitost rozvoje žen ve všech směrech – že je důležité rozvíjet jak intelektuální stránku ženy, tak její mateřské vlohy a touhu starat se o rodinu. Byatt a Drabble nenabízejí čtenáři jediné řešení tohoto ženského dilematu, ale zobrazením různých typů žen poskytují hluboký vhled do této problematiky. Jejich hrdinky mají jednu společnou vlastnost – snahu zkombinovat rodinný i profesní život. Udržet vyrovnanost těchto potřeb je pro ženy velmi důležité a podle mého názoru Byatt a Drabble svými romány výrazně přispěly k veřejné debatě o této (i dnes aktuální) problematice a pomohly společnosti lépe porozumět potřebám žen.

Abstract:

This Master´s diploma thesis is designed as a comparative analysis of five literary characters of women and their struggle between maternity and intellectual development as depicted in the novels by Antonia Susan Byatt (The Virgin in the Garden, Still Life, Babel Tower, A Whistling Woman) and by Margaret Drabble (The Radiant Way, A Natural Curiosity, The Gates of Ivory). I have selected five women characters that represent a “type” of a woman which could be generalised and which describes a common pattern of behaviour of some of the women. These characters are: Frederica Potter (Reiver), Stephanie Potter (Orton) in Byatt´s tetralogy, and Alix Bowen, Esther Breuer, and Elizabeth Headleand in Drabble´s trilogy. The main body of the thesis analyses the attitudes of these five characters to marriage and career prospects and compares and contrasts their decisions and behaviour. Each chapter deals with one of the characters; each chapter is divided into two parts – the first part investigates the attitude and behaviour of the individual character, and the second part offers a comparison of the particular character with the other characters. The final comparison of these five characters reveals that Byatt as well as Drabble portray a rich scale of life experience that women go through and various means of dealing with such situations. By portraying their characters, both authors emphasize how important it is for women to develop their potential fully – to employ both their abilities to take care of their family, and to be intellectually active and to pursue their career prospects. Byatt and Drabble do not provide a single solution to women´s dilemma, but by the variety of their heroines they show a deep insight into this issue. Their heroines have one thing in common – they all struggle to be both mothers as well as successful career-women. This balance of an intellectual development and happy family environment is very important for women, and I believe that Byatt and Drabble contributed a great deal to the public debate of this issue – that people in women´s surroundings started to pay more attention to this problem and to understand it better, as this issue is of relevance even today.
