Social Darwinism in China and Its Significance in the Works of Liu Cixin

Abstract:

This Bachelor's Thesis focuses on the social Darwinism reflected in the history of modern China and in the works of Liu Cixin, a contemporary author of Chinese science- fiction literature, specifically in his trilogy titled Remembrance of Earth's Past (Diqiu wangshi 地球往事), whose central theme is the struggle of human society over the technically superior extraterrestrial civilization. The main issues, that this work deals with, are the importance of social Darwinism for Chinese thinking since the late 19th century, how the modern concepts of modern Chinese identity are influenced by the social Darwinism and how the social Darwinist discourse is reflected in Liu Cixin's work.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá sociálnym darwinizmom v dejinách modernej Číny a v diele súdobého autora čínskej science-fiction literatúry, Liu Cixina, konkrétne v jeho trilógii Spomínanie na minulosť Zeme (Diqiu wangshi地球往事), ktorého ústrednou témou je zápas ľudskej spoločnosti nad technicky vyspelejšou mimozemskou civilizáciou. Hlavné otázky, ktorými sa zaoberá táto práca sú, aký je význam sociálneho darwinizmu pre čínske myslenie od konca 19. storočia dodnes, aké sú súdobé koncepty modernej čínskej identity ovplyvnené sociálnym darwinizmom a ako sa sociálno-darwinistický diskurz prejavuje v diele Liu Cixina.
