Burial rites of Paleo-inuit and recent Inuit cultures

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá třemi paleoinutskými kulturami, jmenovitě Ipiutak, Dotset a Thule, a současnými Inuity. Studuje jejich každodenní život, pohřební ritus, kulturní vývoj v průběhu času i adaptaci na změnu přírodního prostředí. Charakter pohřbu je kostrový. U kultury Ipiutak se jedná o pohřeb do země v rakvi nebo mělký hrob pod drny. Unikátní nálezy byly kostry se vsazenýma očima z mrožoviny a jantarovými zornicemi. Nejčastější výbavou byly hroty šípů, čepele, harpunové hlavice, řezby a hole z mrožoviny. Kultura Dorset se vyznačuje kamennými hroby, jámovými hroby, štěrkovými mohylami či pohřbem v jeskyních a skalních převisech. Hlavní výbava čítá harpunové hlavice a amulety ve tvaru tuleně nebo medvědí hlavy. Thuleská kultura ukládala mrtvé do rakví nad zemí nebo mohyl z kamenů. Zajímavostí jsou mumie z 15. století ze sídliště Qilakitsoq. Ve výbavě můžeme najít harpuny, luky, šípy u mužů a jehly, nitě a nože na ryby u žen. Inuité přejali z křesťanství rakvový pohřeb do země, bez výbavy. Předkládané demografické údaje jsou v některých případech zkresleny stupněm zachování ostatků z důvodu přírodních podmínek či způsobu pohřebního ritu.

Abstract:

This thesis focused on three Paleo-Inuit cultures, namely Ipiutak, Dorset and Thule, and recent Inuit culture; concerning their everyday life, burial rite, cultural development and adaptation to the changes of environment. The burial character is typically skeletal. In Ipiutak culture it means underground burial in coffin or shallow grave right under the sod. The unique findings represent skeletons with carved walrus ivory eyes and amber pupils. The most common grave goods are arrow heads, blades, harpoon heads, carvings and ivory rods. Dorset culture is characterized by stone and pit graves, gravel mounds or burials into the caves or under rock shelters. Main grave goods are harpoon heads, amulets in the shape of seals or bear heads. Thule culture put their dead into the coffins above the ground or stone mounds. Interesting thing are the mummies from 15th century from Qilakitsoq site. In grave goods we can find harpoons, bows, arrows within male graves and needles, thread or fish knife in female graves. Recently, Inuit adopted burial style from Christianity representing underground bury of coffin without any goods. Demographic data represented in this thesis are in some cases distorted by a stage of bones preservation due to the natural conditions or the manner of burial rite.
