Sense of Own Mortality – Coping Strategies in Later Life

Abstract:

Tématem předkládané studie jsou zvládácí strategie ve stáří vzhledem k vědomí vlastní konečnosti. Vědomí vlastní konečnosti je definováno pomocí změn, ke kterým dochází v oblasti sociální, psychické a biologické. Studie se zaměřuje na to, jak staří lidé tyto změny vnímají a jaké strategie zvládání volí, pokud tyto změny vnímají jako zatěžující. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části. V teoretické části vymezuji jednotlivé změny v procesu stárnutí. Druhá polovina je věnována zvládání změn ve stáří a proměnám osobnosti. Praktická část je založená na kvalitativní studii, jejímž cílem bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem staří lidé vnímají změny dílčích oblastí, najít souvislosti mezi jednotlivými kategoriemi a popsat uplatňované strategie zvládání. Vycházela jsem z názoru, že většina změn je pro člověka zatěžujících, i ty, které vedou ke zlepšení současného stavu. Data získaná na základě interview s návodem byla zpracována pomocí metody vytváření trsů. Studie se zúčastnilo šest respondentů, tři muži a tři ženy ve věku od 66 do 83 let. Výsledkem je analýza jednotlivých kategorií, deskripce změn a jejich vnímaní respondenty. Součástí jsou i zvolené strategie zvládání zatěžujících změn. Zjištěné strategie zvládání jsem neřadila podle žádné kategorizace, rozhodla jsem se tak zachovat jejich kvalitativní hodnotu. Ve studii bylo zjištěno, že nejintenzivněji vnímanou změnou, která ovlivňuje všechny další kategorie, je slábnoucí zdraví. Většinu dalších změn vnímali respondenti také jako zatěžující. Objevilo se několik strategií zvládání, respondenti často volili kombinaci dvou až tří strategií v rámci jedné kategorie. Nejvýraznější strategií zvládání je pak orientace na spravedlnost stáří.

Abstract:

Subject of this study is coping strategies in later life regarding sense of own mortality. Sense of own mortality is defined by the help of variations, which occur in social, psychic and biological sphere. The study is focused on changes how are apprehended by senior and what strategy is taken by them in case that this change is perceived as stress. The study is divided into two sections. In the theoretical part are specified individual changes in process of aging. Second half of theoretical part is divided to managing the changes in later life and to changing in personality. Practical section is based on qualitative research, whose aim was identify the way how seniors perceiving changes of particular areas, to find connections between individual categories and describe applied coping strategies. I have gone out from opinion, that most of changes are perceived as stressing, including those which lead to improvement of actual status. The data gained upon interview with instruction was elaborated with the aid of cluster method. I have interviewed six respondents, three men and three women in age between 66 and 83 years. The outcome of the interviews is analysis of various categories, description of the changes and how they are perceived by the respondents. Part of the analysis is selected coping strategies of stressing changes. Identified coping strategies are not sorted by any categorization. I have decided to keep their qualitative value. The study has found out that the most perceived change, impacting all other categories, is faltering health. Majority of other changes is also perceived as stressing. Several strategies came up during the survey, the respondents mainly used combination of two or three strategies within one category. The most expressive coping strategy is orientation on fairness of old age.
