Burnout syndrome in the perioperative care environment

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou výskytu syndromu vyhoření a hodnocením pracovního prostředí v profesi sestry pro perioperační péči. Práce je tvořena částí teoretickou a výzkumnou. V teoretické části je pozornost věnována třem hlavním oblastem, jimiž jsou perioperační péče, syndrom vyhoření a pracovní prostředí. Výzkumná část popisuje metodiku výzkumu, který byl realizován pomocí standardizovaných dotazníků Shirom Melamed Burnout Measure a Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, a prezentuje výsledky získané dotazníkovým šetřením. Výzkum prokázal, že sestry pro perioperační péči zřídka trpí syndromem vyhoření, 21,85 % sester vykazovalo vysoké riziko syndromu vyhoření a pouze 0,84 % sester bylo vyhořelých. Fyzická únava byla stanovena jako hlavní riziková oblast syndromu vyhoření. Polovina (51,26 %) sester pro perioperační péči hodnotila pracovní prostředí jako příznivé, zatímco nepříznivé pracovní prostředí bylo zaznamenáno u pětiny (21,01 %) sester pro perioperační péči. Nedostatek personálu byl identifikován jako nejproblematičtější oblast pracovního prostředí. V diplomové práci byl prokázán vztah mezi syndromem vyhoření a pracovním prostředím, konkrétně - kvalitnější hodnocení pracovního prostředí souvisí s nižší pravděpodobností výskytu syndromu vyhoření. S narůstajícím rozsahem kompetencí a činností sester pro perioperační péči a v kontextu nedostatku kvalifikovaného personálu se nároky na sestry zvyšují ve všech oblastech, a proto je důležité zkoumat faktory stresu a stresory, které mohou přispívat k rozvoji syndromu vyhoření. Zároveň je nezbytné provádět v pravidelných časových intervalech analýzu pracovního prostředí. Pracovní prostředí je jedním z klíčových faktorů, které mohou buď pozitivně, nebo negativně ovlivnit celkový přístup sester a kvalitu poskytované perioperační péče. Na základě těchto zjištění je jedním z doporučení provádět další výzkumná šetření v oblasti perioperační péče.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the occurrence of burnout syndrome and the evaluation of the working environment in the profession of perioperative nurse. The thesis consists of a theoretical part and a research part. The theoretical part focuses on three main areas: perioperative care, burnout syndrome and work environment. The research part describes the methodology of the research, which was carried out using standardised questionnaires Shirom Melamed Burnout Measure and Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, and presents the results obtained from the questionnaire survey. Research has shown that perioperative nurses rarely suffer from burnout, with 21,85 % of nurses at high risk of burnout and only 0,84 % of nurses burned out. Physical fatigue was identified as a major risk area for burnout. Half (51,26 %) of perioperative nurses rated their working environment as favourable, while a fifth (21,01 %) of nurses reported an unfavourable working environment. Staff shortages were identified as the most problematic area of the working environment. The dissertation demonstrated the relationship between burnout syndrome and the work environment, specifically - a better evaluation of the work environment is associated with a lower likelihood of burnout syndrome. With the increasing range of responsibilities and activities of perioperative nurses and the shortage of qualified staff, the demands on nurses in all areas are increasing and it is therefore important to investigate stress factors and stressors that may contribute to the development of burnout. At the same time, it is necessary to carry out a regular analysis of the working environment. The working environment is one of the key factors that can positively or negatively influence the overall attitude of nurses and the quality of perioperative care provided. Based on these findings, one of the recommendations is to conduct further research in the area of perioperative care.
