Non-Royal Town in Early Modern Era in Relations to the Manorial Authorities and Rural Background (Svitavy in the 17th Centrury)

Abstract:

Předkládaná dizertační práce, inspirovaná v přístupu ke zkoumané skutečnosti především teorií centrálního místa a základními tezemi strukturalismu, se zabývá vztahem vrchnostenského města v raném novověku k vrchnosti a jejím úředníkům na jedné straně a venkovskému zázemí na straně druhé. Pro řešení daných otázek bylo zvoleno město Svitavy jako centrum svitavského panství, a to v časovém horizontu 17. století. Úvodní pasáže dvou základních, chronologicky vymezených kapitol představují město, respektive panství jako jeden z prvků širší struktury pozemkového majetku olomouckého biskupa. V následujících podkapitolách je pak toto město postulováno do pozice centra v rámci užší struktury panství a je sledováno, do jaké míry se v daném vymezení realizovaly jeho vztahy k ostatním sídelním jednotkám a vrchnostenské správě a jak dalece jimi bylo toto město definováno. V těchto intencím je předkládaný text zacílen na otázky demografické, správní, právní a hospodářské. Tím ovšem nemá být naznačeno, že ostatní sféry městského života, ať už jde o náboženství, či kulturu v užším významu slova, hrály v dané době a v daném prostoru méně podstatnou roli.

Abstract:

The present PhD thesis, inspired in the approach to the investigated topic particularly by the theory of central place and basic tenets of structuralism, deals with the relationship of the non-royal town in the early modern era to the manorial authorities and their officials on the one hand and to the rural background on the other. For answering the given questions, we have chosen the town of Svitavy as the center of the Svitavy domain, namely in the time horizon of the 17th century. The introductory sections of the first two basic, chronologically delimited chapters present the town or better the domain as one of elements in the wider structure of the estate of the bishop of Olomouc. In the next sections the town is postulated to the position of the center in the narrower structure of the domain, and we investigate to what extent its relationships to other settlement units and manorial authorities were realized in the given delimitation, and how far the town was defined by them. In these intentions the presented text directs to demographic, administrative, legal and economic questions, which is, however, not to suggest that the other spheres of town life played a less significant role in the given period and in the given area.
