The Influence of Disney Studio on Stylistic Methods in Pixar Animated Films

Abstract:

Tato akademická práce se zabývá vlivem studia Walt Disney na stylistické metody studia Pixar po roce 2006, kdy se studio Pixar stalo dceřinou společností Walt Disney. Práce genderově analyzuje Pixar i Disney hlavní protagonisty, jejich vnitřní a vnější charakteristiku a psychologický vývoj. Cíl je prozkoumat základní prvky filmového stylu, které společnost Pixar uplatňuje, jestli se postupem času změnily a jakým způsobem se ozvláštňují, nebo zda naopak zůstává dlouholetá tradice, kterou studio Pixar preferuje a je oblíbená u diváků. Rok 2006 je zásadní pro pochopení vztahu mezi těmito společnostmi, jelikož je možné uvažovat o jisté tvůrčí změně a transformaci stylistických metod studia Pixar ze strany společnosti Walt Disney. Tato otázka se opírá o dlouholetou image studia Walt Disney jako tvůrčího leadera v tradiční animované tvorbě, které nastřádalo během dlouholeté produkce svých pohádek. Práce rozděluje filmy podle zdroje, témat a typologie hrdinů. Další dvě kapitoly charakterizují stylistické metody studia Walt Disney i Pixar. Pomocí informací zjištěných v teoretické části jsou identifikovány klíčové principy vyprávění a stylu Pixar na základě analýz animovaných filmů před rokem 2006 a po roce 2006. Závěr práce porovnává Pixar filmy jako Příběh hraček (1995), Příšerky s.r.o (2001), Vzhůru do oblak (2009), Univerzita pro příšerky (2013), Coco (2017), a Disney filmy jako Ledové království (2013) a Raubíř Ralf a internet (2018). Díky tomuto porovnání se zjistí, jak se stylistické změny Pixaru změnily či zůstaly stejné.

Abstract:

This academic work thesis deals with Walt Disney influation on Pixar stylistic methods after 2006, when Disney bought the Pixar studio. The academic work thesis analyzes Pixar and Disney's main protagonists, their internal and external characteristics and psychological development. The purpose is to examine the basic elements of Pixar's film style, how they changed, innovated, or if Pixar stayed or prefers the same stylistic methods which are popular with the audience. The year 2006 is an important year for understanding the relationship between these companies, because it‘s possible to consider some creative change and transformation of Pixar's stylistic methods by Walt Disney. This question is based on the long-standing image of the Walt Disney studio as a creative leader in traditional animated production, which has accumulated during the production of its fairytales. The academic work thesis divides movies according to the source, themes and heroes typology. The next two chapters characterize the stylistic methods of the Walt Disney and Pixar studios. Thanks to the information found in the theoretical part, Pixar key principles of storytelling and style are identified on the basis of analysis of animated films before 2006 and after 2006. The conclusion compares the Pixar films like Toy Story (1995), Monsters Inc. (2001), Up (2009), Monsters University (2013), Coco (2017), and Disney films like Frozen (2013) and Ralf Breaks the Internet (2018). This comparison shows how Pixar's stylistic methods have changed or remained.
