Analogy as the essence of human thinking and language

Abstract:

Hlavní tezí této práce je tvrzení, že jazykový význam je analogickým vztahem. Práce vychází z pojetí analogie v díle D. Hofstadtera a toto pojetí rozvádí do oblasti sémantiky. Pro Hofstadtera je analogie uchopením a interpretací současné zkušenosti pomocí zkušeností minulých. Mentální struktura v paměti, tedy koncept, strukturuje data z vnímání. Takto pojatá analogie může být chápána jako základ lidského myšlení a kognice. Jazyk v tomto pojetí kognice a myšlení hraje ale spíše vedlejší úlohu, protože tyto mentální struktury nemusí být nutně jazykové povahy a stejný mechanismus analogie je dokázán i u nejazykových subjektů. Vysvitá tak otázka po účelu jazyka. V práci je tak nejdříve navrženo rozlišení analogie percepční a analogie jazykové, kdy první je chápána jako nástroj vnímání a druhá jako nástroje komunikace. Jazykové výrazy se při procesu učení se jazyku stávají součástí mentálních struktur v paměti, a pomocí užití těchto výrazů lze pak aktivovat mentální struktury nesouvisející s obsahem vnímání. To pak za předpokladu sdílení jazykového kódu umožňuje vyvolávat v posluchači jinou zkušenost mimo tu, co právě vnímá. Dochází tak k reprezentaci nepřítomné zkušenosti, která je v této práci chápána jako základní účel komunikace. Takto pojatá sémantika je sémantikou mentalistickou ve které významem i denotátem jazykového výrazu je koncept.

Abstract:

The main idea of this paper lies in the claim that linguistic meaning is an analogical relation. The thesis is based on the theory of analogy by D. Hofstadter, which is then developed in semantic context. According to Hofstadter, analogy is an interpretation of new experiences through memories of previous ones. The perceived perceptual data are organized by the mental structures in human memory, called concepts. Analogy seen this way can be understood as the core of cognition and thinking. By contrast to memory and perception, language fulfils only an auxiliary role in this theory due to the concepts not necessarily needing to be linguistic in nature, since this mechanism of analogy was proved in non-linguistic subjects. This brings out the question of the purpose of language. This thesis proposes a distinction between analogy of perception and linguistic analogy, the former being understood as an instrument of perception and the latter as an instrument of communication. Linguistic expressions become a part of the memory mental structures during the process of learning one's language and due to this fact, it is possible to activate these mental structures through the usage of given expressions, even though these structures are unrelated with the content of perception. Thus, it is possible for the speaker to evoke a different experience in the hearer than the one he is currently perceiving. This phenomenon can be called the absent experience, which is in this thesis understood as the basic purpose of communication. In this point of view, semantics can be seen as mainly psychological type of semantics, as it explains both the meaning of a word and the denotation of a word as a concept, a mental structure in memory.
