Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá životní podmínky dělnické třídy, konkrétně dělníků v prvních textilních továrnách, jak je popsaly Charlotte Brontëová v Shirley a Elizabeth Gaskellová v románu Sever a jih. Základní otázky pro výzkum jsou zda Brontëová a Gaskellová uspěly ve zprostředkování ‚stavu Anglie’ svým čtenářům převážně z vyšších a středních vrstev a tím je poučily a zda splnily svůj cíl navrhnout proveditelné a efektivní řešení tohoto neuspokojivého stavu. Kromě analýzy dotčených románů práce obsahuje kapitolu určující dobu, kdy se příběhy odehrávají. Následují stručné kapitoly o historickém pozadí, tj. ludistickém a chartistickém hnutí, a teoretická kapitola na téma tříd ve společnosti.

Abstract:

The thesis examines living conditions of the working classes, in particular early textile factory workers, as pictured in Charlotte Brontë’s Shirley and Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South. The basic research questions are whether Brontë and Gaskell succeeded in mediating the ‘Condition of England’ to their prevalently upper and middle-class readers and thus in educating them, and whether the authors accomplished their aim of outlining a practicable and effective resolution to the less than satisfactory state of these conditions. Besides the analysis of the novels in question, a chapter determining the time setting of the novels is included, followed by brief chapters on historical background, that is the movements of Luddism and Chartism, and a theoretical chapter on classes.
