Mobile Companion Application for a Tabletop Game

Abstract:

Wargames are tabletop strategy games that rely on dice -based mechan- ics, numerical calculations, and complex rule systems. Learning these games requires significant dedication, and playing them accurately de- mands sustained attention to avoid mistakes. This thesis investigates whether developing a digital companion application can meaningfully support players during gameplay. The study examines the advantages and disadvantages of companion apps within the wargaming context, focusing on usability, player experience, and the balance between digital assistance and traditional tactile enjoyment. To explore this, both a low -fidelity prototype and a functional prototype of a companion app for Eldfall Chronicles were designed and implemented. The prototypes featured randomised map generation, enemy AI behaviour, a tutorial, and game-assistant modes. These prototypes were evaluated through playtesting sessions involving both new and experienced players. Findings indicate that companion apps can aid new players in learning the game and reduce the computation load and rule management. However, participants also noted that digital tools may diminish certain physical pleasures of wargaming, such as rolling dice. Despite these trade-offs, the results suggest that companion apps hold strong potential to improve the overall gameplay experience.
